Elfrid Payton On Last-Second Jae Crowder Shot: 'Don't Disrespect The Game Like That'

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jan 30, 2020 8:12 am

Elfrid Payton, Marcus Morris, and Jae Crowder were all ejected with 48 seconds left in the Memphis Grizzlies' 127-106 win over the New York Knicks.

Crowder attempted a 3-point shot with the Grizzlies up 124-106 in the game. Payton showed Crowder to the ground, resulting in both benches clearing.

Payton said he had no regrets over his actions.

"That shot was disrespectful. I'm standing on that. I'd a did it again. Doesn't matter who took that shot. Don't disrespect the game like that," said Payton.

Morris called out Crowder for being unprofessional following the game.

"He plays the game a different way. He's got a lot of female tendencies on the court, flopping and throwing his head back the entire game. It's a man's game and you just get tired of it. When you step back and shoot a 3 ... and like rub it in ... he's unprofessional. He's soft. His game is soft. He's very womanlike," said Morris.

Morris tweeted an apology for using the term "female tendencies."

Crowder was unavailable for comment after the game.

Bruh chill,

I personally ain’t taking a TO when I can just throw up a half assed shot as the shot clock expires...

But also, why Crowder gotta come back like that...
Just putting em both in a bad light.

I didn’t realize there were 48 seconds left. Payton is acting like an idiot here, unless the shot clock has been turned off the Grizzlies still have to shoot at some point. That’s when teams generally hold onto the ball and let the clock expire. He’s complaining about nonsense.

Crowder got clocked in a non-basketball play, plus it was dangerous too because he was airborn. There was nothing wrong with the way he reacted here, Payton was the one in the complete wrong.

his haircut his first 4 years in the league disrespected the game. as for Morris talking about a $%#$%-move, he committed to the Spurs then backed out. he needs to look in the mirror.

So you cant shoot it with 48 seconds left now??? What's next? No one should shoot it when there are still 2 minutes left in the game? I get it if it's under 24 seconds but 48 seconds?

Maybe they shouldn’t disrespect the game by being such a **** team. Then they won’t get the score “run up” on them.

48 seconds left? I’m shooting. Shot clock off? Then I’ll hold.

Realgm reporters are so bad, they don't report the full story.

Crowder stole the inbounds play with 48 seconds left and went to the corner to shoot a 3. The steal to me was the issue. No need for that with 48 seconds left as far ahead as MEM was.

No excuse for Payton, but he's still upset his mom made him cut his hair.

You can shoot it, sure. But 99% of the time, if you get a steal at that point, you don't run to the corner and pop a 3 with 18 seconds still on the clock. You pull the ball out, and take a shot later in the clock. At that point, it's a better strategy to just burn the clock out instead of run up the score. Thats what just about every team/player would do.

I'm glad the Knicks were mad about it. That being said, shoving a guy to the ground while he's in the air and calling him a girl post game is also disrespecting the game. Both parties are in the wrong here.

These unwritten rules need to stop. It's pure idiocy. The game isn't over until it is over. If Crowder wants to shoot, he can. If you push him out of the air without care, be ready for the consequences.

Actually only starters/main bench players have a problem with this. If you see games where bench warmers are subbed in, they play (sometimes at actual game speed) until the game is at 0 secs. So it is really just about the ego of some of the entitled players. There is nothing wrong with what Crowder did.

Morris is one of the biggest losers in the league. I did not even realize Elfrid was relevant. Guess he has to push someone to get noticed. Easy to push Crowder when it's unlikely he'd get a chance to beat his ass.

You coincidentally left out the other part of my post where my point was that strategically, the correct play would have been to pull the ball out and run the clock down in that situation. Regardless of how much you're team is up, you'd rather have the lead with 30 seconds left then with 45 seconds left, right?

It depends on how the game was going. If Crowder was just being a ass and wanted to rubb it in more I can understand why they got mad. It could be the way he acted all game and got under there skin. There's much more to it then what is being talked about. Payton and Morris already have the bead guy mentality. So it's easy to say there the blame and saying comments like female tendencies. That makes them sound like villains. It sounds like all 3 of them are wrong. And Morris and Payton over reacted. I'm not a fan of quick to fight type individuals because they never fully look into the situation. 48 seconds is a lot of time left to just take a turnover. And seeing they got mad over how he was carrying on all game. It's weird. All I know is the bulls need some players who are personal about losing

If you're talking about good/bad plays, Crowder was wide open for that three. Is it strategically correct to shoot a wide open shot regardless of the time in the shot clock or a contested shot at the end of a shot clock? The objective of the game is to score the ball, not take time off the game clock as much as possible.

Edit: To answer your other question, I'd rather have a 21 point lead with 48 secs left than 18 point lead with 30 secs left.

If you watch the replay, Payton and the other knicks were still trapping Morant and even contesting shots by JV and Brooks when they are already down by 15 at that point. Then Payton gets angry when the same thing is done to them. I think Morant was ready to run the clock down if only Payton did not pressure him into passing the ball.
