So no hindsight.
reeeeeeally wanted him. just not enough to trade, say, their #22 pick in the same draft to move up a spot or two
Maybe other teams didn't want to trade their pick? Perhaps Ainge gambled that he was smarter than everyone and was convinced that he didn't have to trade up to get a really good player?
We don't know. They never leak such inside information. Rumours about trade negotiations often tend to be false. Like the Anthony Davis rumours and on the other hand nobody saw the Irving-Thomas trade coming or the #1 pick trade with Philly.
For the Celtics it would make a lot of sense to try to trade up the coming draft with picks #14, #26 and #30, while already having soo many young players on the team (Waters, Edwards, Langford, Brown, Tatum, G.Williams, R.Williams, Fall), but there has to be a team that's willing to trade down.
I bet that Mark Cuban wasn't the only guy who saw how special Doncic was going to be (even back then kind of crazy he fell to #3), however Atlanta traded their pick to Dallas, and I think there were a lot of GM's who knew at that time they had just missed out on a potential superstar.
