Cavs 'Intend To Hit The Gas A Little Bit' On Rebuild

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sat Oct 31, 2020 6:58 pm

The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to start competing in the near future, sources told Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

"The Cavs, who have sort of been at the bottom, from what I have understand, intend to move up. They intend to hit the gas a little bit," reported Windhorst (h/t to Pro Basketball Talk).

The team currently has the fifth pick in the upcoming draft.

J.B. Bickerstaff recently said that he plans on having Andre Drummond for the future

Drummond has a $28.7 million player option for next season.

honestly they need to try to tank for bronny jr if for no other reason but in hopes that it lures Bron Sr. to come back one last time

They can try but I'm not sure they have the talent to do anything significant. Unless their young guys suddenly break out or they trade for a star, I think their place in the reverse standings will be safe for a little bit longer.

Play Kevin Porter 30 mins per game. Trade Love for a 1st pick and expirings. Draft Wiseman or Okongwu.

PG Garland - Exum
SG Sexton - Porter
SF Osman - Porter
PF Nance -
C Drummond - #5

Just a thought; trade the 5th pick for 2-3 future first round picks. Saves money now and doesn't bring a solid rookie into a losing environment. Do what you can to clear more cap space this additional season, or trade Drummond/Nance or anything of value for some bad contracts and future firsts. Take a few extra years and the cavs will be destined for greatness.

Strategies like this is why bottom feeders remain bottom feeders for years on end.

Oh Cleveland. You had an affair with relevance because of LeBron, but you're still a tiny market that's never going to do anything.

To me, if you are going to tank then commit 100%

Sam Hinkie did the right thing with the 76ers when compared to the Knicks, CAVs, Charlotte, and other bottom dwellers.

Cleveland needs to follow the same approach.

Sell everyone for draft pick. Take on large contracts provided that draft picks are attached. There is no need to try and win when in the end you end up in the lottery anyway.

Signing Drummond to a multi year extension should be the first step. That would ensure that the Cavs would "hit the gas a little" for many years to come, never actually going full throttle.

I think given their less than optimal outcome in the draft last time and this time, the idea is to try to start winning and thats all this means mostly.
I highly doubt Drummond and the Cavs are on the same page as far as any extention nor do I think CLE will overpay to keep him.

Well, if you want to hit the gas a little, I have just the deal for you!

Horford, Richardson, 34, and 36 for Nance, Exum, Osman, and Dean Wade.

No thanks. Horford has one of the worst contracts in the league & we already have Kevin Love. Nance & Exum aren't just throw ins.

A team like Golden State, Boston, Miami, Lakers, Clippers, Rockets might be willing to pay significantly for their 5th pick in the draft. That could look something like a 2022, 2024, 2026 and maybe a pick swap. I think they should look at these types of trades. Go through a similar rebuild as what Boston did considering no free agents want to sign in Boston anymore than they do in Clevland

You get high 2nds for both of them. And bad contract or not, Horford and Richardson make the Cavs better.

Agree. But it'd be folly to actually think the Cavs "have a plan."
