NBA, NBPA Running Out Of Time For Dec. 22nd Start To Season

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Nov 2, 2020 9:26 pm

The NBA and NBPA continue to discuss a number of issues ahead of the 20-21 season, including whether it will start on December 22nd or January 18th.

During a conference call with general managers on Monday, Adam Silver expressed some pessimism that they will be able to reach an agreement with the players in time for the December 22nd start.

"We're running out of time," said Silver.

In addition to maintaining a dialogue with its players, the NBPA are also talking to the league on a number of financial amendments to the CBA.

They can start MLK Day, get 60 games in with no All Star break, then wrap up the Finals about a week before the Olympics.

The owners are gonna want 40% escrow. The players will offer 20%. It's going to take 35% to get the owners on board since they are missing the Christmas Day game TV money.

Adam Silver just needs to put it out in simpler terms, we start anytime after Dec. 25th, the money you make will be at a 50-75% decrease because we don't have the revenue.

Think they should start Dec 22 and if any player wants to sit out for a week or 2 than they should do it and just forfeit the money they wouldn't have made anyway. Everyone has to sacrifice something. The league as a whole earning more revenue is good for everybody not just the owners.

That makes sense but the owners are telling the players they’re going to shorten the season to only 50 games if they don’t start in December. Scare tactic so we will see who blinks first. This is usually MLB style of negotiating

It's not the owners who are saying this. It's the television companies. They want to make sure they can air the Olympics without the playoffs getting in the way.

TV execs are telling the NBA to be done before the Olympics start. 25 weeks from January 18th until
July 12th 2021. Tight window. 175 days. 60 games, a play in tournament, and 4 full rounds of playoffs. If they have a Game 7 in every round they could go over that by a few days, too.

Good news is, I just looked up, the Olympics have a start date scheduled of July 23rd. Should be able to sneak it in if they can get an agreement together before the draft.

I understand that the quick turnaround is d on the players physically. And than might lead to serious long term injuries. But they really do need to play on Xmas to keep football — college or pro — from getting a foothold on broadcasts that day. It’s a big source of revenue and if the networks go to football, they might nit come back if football is successful. I can’t fathom anyone wanting to watch even a decent football game over ANY basketball game, but apparently such people exist.

We haven't had a draft OR free agency. Um... yeah, they're running out of time.
