Tokyo Olympics Likely To Be Canceled Outright

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jan 22, 2021 2:37 am

The Tokyo Olympics scheduled to begin on July 23rd, 2021 will likely be canceled after they were postponed from the summer of 2020, according to a report from The Times of London.

The Japanese government has privately made the conclusion that COVID-19 will remain too large a threat to safely proceed.

“No one wants to be the first to say so but the consensus is that it’s too difficult,” the source said. “Personally, I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

Tokyo is focused on securing the Games for the city in 2032.

The NBA has been attempting to finish the 2021 Finals in time to allow players to compete in the Olympics and to avoid having its signature event air on television against the games.

Most of their money is made from TV deals so even if fans are restricted, the viewership is important - and that's how most of the world experiences Olympics anyway.

To counter the Times report, there is this one:

Best not to get ahead of what's actually happening with rumours to the contrary.

If U.S. sports can play without crowds, and if the NBA can play in a bubble, the Olympics can as well.

The government isn't a greedy private enterprise. Why would they go ahead with it?

This is total BS. I have it on good authority Japan is ramping up to host the Olympics as previously stated. The Times of London may be trusted at times, but this is just clickbait... at best!

The reason for hosting the olympics is to get a boom from tourism and help pay for building new infrastructure.

You can't compare Olympics and league games. It completely different beast.

The reason is national prestige. Olympics tourism is a financial drop in the bucket for Japan. It's been shown that the GDP boost from Olympics related infrastructure and tourism results in a backslide in future years and a bunch of mostly useless infrastructure that must be paid for on the back end. Japan especially needs none of that. I agree that it's different and that the financial incentive is not there, but my point is that it's entirely doable. It's more about desire than capability, and since most Japanese are fine with the cancellation, we can expect that to be the result.
