The Boston Celtics have interest in Harrison Barnes, sources tell Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated.

Boston also has interest in Jerami Grant, but the Detroit Pistons are considered unlikely to consider trading him.

Barnes signed a four-year, $85 million deal with the Sacramento Kings during the 2019 offseason.

The Celtics would build any trade for a player on a significant contract around their $28.5 million trade exception they acquired as part of the Gordon Hayward sign-and-trade.

Without getting into the specifics on Barnes, a versatile big wing who can credibly defend the four, shoot the three, and provide a modicum of creation as a fourth banana makes a lot of sense for the Celts.

Barnes is a good player but I don't see the move taking them to that next level.

But when you're using a traded player exception only to acquire a player, all you're giving to his old team is salary relief. It's hard to trade for a "game changer" or a player will take "them to the next level." It may be the best they can do. And Barnes may not get hem there, but he' still enough of a solid player that he can help.

He is a proven 4th banana. Although, I think the C’s need some damn whip cream to get out the east this year.

The only way the Celtics are getting out of the East is if they fly to Vegas to use that whip cream on the strippers.

Ainge was silly imo, he should have traded Hayward to Indy for Turner/parts - now that starting 5 (if Walker is healthy) would stand a real chance against the real contenders in the East.

Yeah that wasn't really on the table--at best the two teams loosely talked about it, before they talked to Hayward himself (who had full control over the situation) and before the Hornets had made the offer that the Pacers weren't going to match no matter what. It's goofy that Ainge didn't want to do the trade, but it still wasn't going to happen either way.
