Bobby Marks: Front Offices Now Basically At Mercy Of Training Staff

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed May 26, 2021 6:46 pm

The Utah Jazz decided to hold Donovan Mitchell out of Game 1 of their first round series against the Memphis Grizzlies, which became a controversial decision within the franchise. Mitchell publicly opposed the move and

"I just think we're in a day and age that's different than back even five or six years ago where the training staffs carry a lot of weight," said Bobby Marks on The Hoop Collective Podcast. "They are the decision makers from an injury standpoint. And the front offices are basically at the mercy of your sports medicine, slash, training, slash strength and conditioning departments."

Marks and Brian Windhorst also commended how the Jazz are typically one of the NBA's best run franchises, which made the issue more surprising.

Nobody wants to have the next kevin durant/klay thompson issue where a star pushes their way back from a relatively minor injury and then gets seriously hurt.

Klay Thompson didn't get hurt coming back and playing basketball before he should have, he tore his Achilles during a workout that he was doing on his own. But that's part of the rehab process... You can't recover from an injury and get back into basketball shape without working out and preparing for it. That means there is some degree of risk involved. It's impossible to completely ensure no one will ever get hurt again following an injury.
