NBA Revenue Down 33 Percent During 20-21 Due To Pandemic

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Jul 7, 2021 1:19 am

The NBA's' revenue was down by roughly 33 percent during the 20-21 season, which beat their initial projection of a 40 percent drop due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The league played most of its regular season with either reduced or limited capacity arenas. During the playoffs, most arenas reopened to near or at full capacity.

The NBA has in the past said that approximately 40 percent of its revenue comes from gate receipts and money spent at and around arenas.

Lol that's not why

NBA can blame it on that. But that's absolutely not the main catalyst.

If anything, the pandemic should've helped them. Majority of the world staying at home. So much more time to watch TV, and stay up late to do so.

Try again, NBA, with a different, irrelevant excuse.

You cute...

You still watch sports on television at home? You cute....

The revenue for all sports dropped during the pandemic, with MLB leading by percentage of drop...followed by the NFL:

The NBA actually did comparatively well. That said, much of the lost revenue is because now only losers pay to watch sports on TV at home. The major sports need to update their business models.

"Kid"? I am probably old enough to be your dad....

What avenues? Boxing, golf, etc. dropped equivalently as well. The movie industry was also decimated, as was theater. TV/cable revenues went down too. The only entertainment areas that went up? Video-on-demand, streaming video and electronic sell through. Which is why I wrote that the major sports need to update their business models--and how they track viewership/popularity. E.g., it should be cheaper/easier to watch single games online--with the flexibility to cancel (full refund) right up to tip off if key players on either team are "rested" that game. (No way I'm paying if time management removes the key matchups.)

Great idea Talkibansei

Pay per view, let the players and the owners feel the pinch in viewership/dollars when they play the "rest" game and when they decide to entertain us with their politics rather than their brilliant athleticism.
