Only Five Teams Have Retained Their Own Second Round Pick

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jul 22, 2021 6:38 pm

Over the past decade, second round picks have become increasingly used in trades with some teams seeking more of them while others have found them expendable.

Only five of the 30 teams have retained their own second-round pick in Thursday’s Draft: Boston Celtics, Sacramento Kings, Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder own two additional second round picks as well as their own.

The Pistons don't own their second round pick, but they do have three incoming from other teams.

Second round picks are also often traded during the draft, which could drop the number from five even further.

Oklahoma City now has 36 total draft picks over the next seven years: 18 first-round picks and 18 second-round picks

OKC will essentially dictate the course of the league's rosters for the next decade ( and whose impact will be felt for the next 2 decades given the number of draft picks ).

Sam Presti will be the most important / influential / impactful executive in modern NBA history -- next in line for NBA Commissioner role perhaps?
