Chris Paul Has Approximately $75M In Guaranteed Money In $120M Contract With Suns

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Aug 4, 2021 1:36 am

Chris Paul and the Phoenix Suns agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract as free agency opened, but it has a far lower number in terms of guaranteed money as anticipated.

According to John Gambadoro, the third year of Paul's deal is only partially guaranteed at $15 million and the final season is a team option.

With Paul at an annual average of approximately $30 million, his guaranteed salary if he only plays the next two seasons with the Suns, is only $75 million.

Yet a bunch of fools wanted to roast the Suns for the deal before finding out the facts.

it's a "wink wink" two year deal.
I bet they already agreed to buy him out after year two and he retires.

This is a good deal for both sides under the circumstances. Paul got 30M in additional guarantees, the Suns spread the money out over a longer period of time to ease their cap and kept a guy that was key in their revival. I wouldn't say Paul got much less guaranteed money than anticipated though. I wouldn't have really anticipated him doing a whole lot better than this at the same time once you see the final numbers, Phoenix clearly didn't just hose this up like many first thought either.
