76ers Haven't Had Interest In CJ McCollum

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Dec 7, 2021 9:25 pm

The Philadelphia 76ers have consistently sought a legitimate star such as Damian Lillard in exchange for Ben Simmons, which has meant that a second tier star such as CJ McCollum of the Portland Trail Blazers hasn't been of interest.

"My reporting is Philly has really never gotten anywhere in terms of being interested in McCollum. Philly has just been 'Dame or nothing,'" said Zach Lowe on his podcast on Tuesday

"Unless, you know there's been these reports about three picks, or three pick swaps, or blah, blah, blah. I don't know how real that ever was, but I don't think there's ever been any real traction to this point of Philly wanting CJ McCollum."

They don’t need CJ. Just stop now, unless a 3rd team wants him.

No one is going to be interested in CJ McCollum and his collapsed lung now. I wish him a speedy recovery but Portland really missed any chance here of getting value for this guy.

This sums up why a deal never got done for Simmons because Daryl Morey's expectation on a return doesn't match reality.

Nah, it's because he's consistently stuck with a simple strategy that he's announced like forty times. The plan is to try to trade Simmons and other pieces (Maxey, Thybulle, picks, etc) for a star-ish guy who could make the Sixers a potential title contender. Getting an aging solid scorer like McCollum or Brogdon isn't a bad return in a vacuum but it doesn't really put them in the same class as MIL or BKN or PHX, LAL, etc, so they're waiting to see if something that could do that does arise. You can disagree with that strategy, and everyone knows there's a strong possibility it might come to nothing, but you don't need to keep repeating that Morey is delusional or whatever. It's not a difficult idea to understand, and Morey hasn't budged on it since the summer.

And all of what you just wrote doesn't make him any less delusional.

Not sure if you're missing the point but no it's not delusional, it's just banking on a long shot. Some combo of Simmons, Maxey/Thybulle/Curry, and 2-3 1sts is a very good offer for Dame or Beal or whoever, good talent value and can match $. It's a competitive package. Those guys might not become available or the team might go with some other offer, but the only thing Morey is saying is that he wants to hold out for that at least until it's clear it's definitely not happening. I'd probably prefer just taking something simpler that was available but it's not a complicated plan and Morey's not just tripping about how great Simmons is.
