Donovan Mitchell On Trade Talk: I'll Think About That In a Week

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Apr 29, 2022 1:03 pm

The Utah Jazz season ended in disappointment with a first round loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Almost immediately after the Game 6 loss, speculation started about Utah's future, especially with star guard Donovan Mitchell.

When asked if he wants to stay with the Jazz, Mitchell initially responded "Yeah, I do." When pressed about rumors involving him asking for a trade, Mitchell expanded his thoughts.

"My mindset is to win. Like I said, right now, I'm not looking at (asking for a trade). For me, I just want to win, yo. This hurts. Like I said, I’ll think about it in a week and go from there, but right now, I’m not really thinking about any of that."

Mitchell just completed the first year of a five-year max deal. He has four more years under contract, with the final season in 25-26 being a player option.

not a fan of guys asking out early in a brand new contract (not saying Mitchell is). yes, player empowerment - i get it - but it screws small market teams because often they get fleeced on trades. the NBA has a huge problem.

I can't stand how frequently the word "star" is used.

Donovan Mitchell is not a star. He's a very good player who could be a missing piece on another team, but he is not someone to build around.

Eh, If mitchell ever asks out, it will be because the Jazz just let this disfunctional gobert pairing drag on forever and didn't ever properly build around him. The guys a scoring machine just coming into his prime his supporting cast is a guy he hates some solid vets on the downside of their carriers. It's great to make the playoffs in a tough west and all, but if you want to get to the next level, you have to be doing that with guys who are growing together on the same timeline.

What if the term for someone to build around is a Superstar?

In 39 career playoff games Mitchell has averaged 28/5/5... that's a star.

For comparison:
Steph has career playoff averages of 27/5/6.
Lillard has career playoff averages of 26/4/6.
Kyrie has career playoff averages of 23/4/5.
Kobe had career playoff averages of 26/5/5.
Dwyane Wade had career playoff averages of 22/5/5.

Hope he stays away from Knicks. They don't need to trade the farm for him.

I’d say he’s well worth a max contract, so he’s not going to be the reason you didn’t get past the 1st round.

He may not be Giannis or Luka level, the guys who considerably more value than a max contract, but there’s simply not many of those in the league.

I don’t think Gobert the player necessarily makes a bad fit, but his contract does as the Jazz aren’t able finagle a 3rd star for the team. But yeah in general I agree with you that this core may not ascend much higher in the West.

That they couldn’t at least jump on Dallas early in the series while Luka was out is a really troubling sign.

The pairing is dysfunctional in the locker room. I'm sure it would work out on the court if they respected each other personally.

But you see no problem with teams wanting to trade players in a brand new contract…

The Knicks need a PG badly. Unless they are planning to make IQ the starter, they have to bring somebody in. Burks ain't the guy. I like him, but he's better as a 2 guard.

You'd think so, but if they aren't giving up rj than they are giving up everything else they have... If that's even enough.

The Jazz have him for at least 3 more years.
