Rafael Stone: Rockets Open To Moving Third Overall Pick

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed May 18, 2022 12:00 pm

The Houston Rockets were unlucky in the NBA Draft Lottery, as they were jumped by the Orlando Magic and the Oklahoma City Thunder. That dropped the Rockets from a pre-lottery spot of first overall to third overall.

For Houston general manager Rafael Stone, he feels the team is still in position to get a really good player. However, he added the Rockets will listen to trade offers for the third pick.

"If it's the case that (other teams) are interested in doing something, we're always available to listen," Stone said. "If there’s something that makes sense for both teams it’ll get done.”

Stone acknowledged that there is a sense of relief after the lottery, because now teams know where they'll be picking. Stone feels good about his potential options with the third pick.

“We’re really excited," Stone said. "I definitely think by picking third or trading, we’re going to be a materially more talented team than we were last year.”

Being in the top four this year is great because this is a four player draft. The three big men and Ivey. I mean, a pick can always be had for the right price but they’d be smart to just sit back and take whoever of the three bigs are left.

- Wall is only in there to match salary.
- It's not a 3 player draft at all.
- I have no idea what the Rockets would be looking for but it's not terrible value

Brogdon and Turner appear to have peaked as players. Even the healthiest version of those guys is far away from franchise type players. In addition, Brogdon is approaching 30, injury prone, and has a sizeable salary that would be difficult to move, if he continues to be so injury prone. Turner is the more valuable player with the cheaper contract, but that only means a decision to extend is coming, and his injury-prone status makes that a difficult one. All in all, top three picks are a swing for the franchise cornerstone fences. You don't give up those types of picks for anything but a legit star, preferably a superstar or franchise player. Adding two players together doesn't make a star, and just is laughable in your trade scenario. It IS a TERRIBLE VALUE in return! The Rockets might do that deal to trade down to #6. Of course then the Rockets might need to throw in some extra compensation. The point is, if they trade that pick, it'll include at least a slightly lower lottery pick or a star player in the return package.

The other commenter seems to have brought up Wall as a possibility that you think the Rockets would take such a mediocre return package in order to incentivize a salary dump of Wall. It's the only way your proposal would make sense. Since he's only in it for salary matching, it makes even less sense.

This wouldn't be bad value if Wall had an additional year on his contract but since he's expiring they might as well just #3 and take Banchero or trade down if they want to add additional pieces to the roster. Houston is still in early stage of rebuild.

Perfect time to dump Wood for sure. Maybe Portland would be interested considering they have a lottery pick too.

Banchero is going to be a great pro so I don’t know what you are talking about. Chet/Jabari/Paolo is a great Top 3 in this draft

A team that would take on Brogdon/Turner or Brogdon/Hield would be someone who’s looking for added depth for their core and playoff push. This trade is moronic for HOU. They are still years away by doing this. Why not take Paolo and build wait for Wall to expire and build fro there in free agency plus you’ll have some very young assets with big value from picking high in the draft surplused

It's a 4 player class: Jaden Ivey.

We can’t get Duncan playing time in the playoffs. We will
need to pay to get out of that negative contract.
