James Jones: Deandre Ayton A Big Part Of What We Do

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu May 19, 2022 12:37 pm

Deandre Ayton is one of the best free agents available this summer, despite his restrict free agent status. Yet, Ayton's future with the Phoenix Suns remains in doubt.

Suns general manager James Jones said that Ayton remains a part of his team's plans.

“Deandre had an amazing season and he’s progressed every year and improved every year,” Jones said. “He’s been here and so he’s a big part of what we do. His future with us is something we will address at the proper time which is in the future. He’s a free agent and I’ve said all along: he’s about the same things were about, which is winning. We’ll address it at the proper time.”

Ayton and Phoenix could not reach agreement on a contract extension last offseason. Ayton reportedly wanted a five-year, max deal, while the Suns countered by offering only four years. Now, Ayton could be a target for teams hoping to sign him via an offer sheet in restricted free agency.

In other words: James Jones carefully said nothing and we have gained no insight. Thanks for the update!

Not sure why teams do that in the press. How hard is it to say "We love ayton and hope we can keep him a sun for a long time". And then just leave it at that. You don't need to posture for contract negotiations in public. That's not going to help you resign the guy and isn't going to help in trade negotiations if you don't want to resign him.

He is not coming back. Huge mistake by the Suns. Breaking up tyhr young core will blow up in their face. Paul is at tyhe end of his productive years, That leaves Bridges nad Booker. Brdges is a good your player. Not the difference maker on offense at tghis point.

Push comes to shove, I would bet Phoenix let's Ayton go get an offer and matches it, and offers him the same 4 year max, because no one can top that anyway.
