Lakers, Knicks Could Explore Julius Randle Trade

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Jul 18, 2022 7:53 pm

If the New York Knicks successfully trade for Donovan Mitchell, they could pivot to a trade of Julius Randle to shed future salary, a source told Marc Sten.

One team that could consider trading for Randle are the Los Angeles Lakers, who could use Russell Westbrook as a makeweight. New York's interest in Westbrook is as a contract.

The Lakers are currently attempting to use Westbrook in a trade for Kyrie Irving. They have also been linked to possible trades for Eric Gordon and Buddy Hield.

Westbrook is on a $47.1 million expiring contract.

Randle is entering Year 1 of a four-year, $117 million deal. Randle played his first four NBA seasons with the Lakers.

1) That makes no sense for the Lakers. AD, Lebron and Randle all play essentially the same position.
2) That makes no sense for the Knicks. They can get certainly get more for Randle than Westbrook's expiring deal.

The point of trading for Mitchell and signing Brunson is (right or wrong) to play with Randle. Why on earth would the Knicks trade Randle for a guy that they'll then just buy out? So they can give the position to a less talented and still unproven Obi Toppin? Just so they can free up cap space to do what? And no please don't start with the 2029 1st round pick or Talen Freaking Horton-Tucker.

Over/under 3 Lakers trade rumor articles on RealGm this week?

Can tell it’s getting slow in NBA news world. These guys talk about the same players going to the same teams over and over.

This one really makes zero sense for the Lakers unless they move AD for say KD or someone else. AD and Randle would just clog up the lane more for LeBron.

Also makes zero sense for the Knicks unless they want the cap room next year, but considering they can't seem to recruit big names, I'd rather keep Randle and see how it works with Brunson. Maybe they can somehow get Mitchell to play with those 2 as well.

"a source told Marc Stein"

It's like he's getting his info from the Real GM boards. There's absolutely nothing to this, but as a fan of chaos who also hates both franchises, I'd love for this to come true
