Hornets Didn't Pull $7.9M Qualifying Offer To Miles Bridges

Miles Bridges remains a restricted free agent this offseason after he was arrested on June 29th and charged with felony domestic violence. The allegations against Bridges were documented and published by the victim shortly after the incident.

Bridges has a court date in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

While there have been no teams linked with a contract offer to Bridges, the Charlotte Hornets did not withdraw their qualifying offer to him by the July 13th deadline.

In order for Bridges to become an unrestricted free agent, he would have to agree to Charlotte withdrawing the $7.9 million qualifying offer.

Bridges was widely expected to receive a long-term contract offer well over $100 million in total money in free agency.

Not to be THAT guy, but we don't know 100% that all that he's being accused of happened. If it comes out that it didn't happen, the Hornets are in a crappy spot if they would've pulled his QO

Apparently he has to agree to let them pull it and right now that would be stupid. His best option is to let it roll over because that might be his last NBA contract. If he is found guilty or the evidence is overwhelming, I think he gets blackballed.

Not likely. NBA contracts, like most major sports contracts, include a morals clause. If he's convicted of a felony, his contract can be voided.

Per the NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement's Policy on Domestic Violence:

Based on a finding of just cause, the Commissioner may fine, suspend, or dismiss and disqualify from any further association with the NBA and its teams a player who engages in prohibited conduct in violation of this Policy. Repeat offenders will be subject to enhanced discipline.

That said, the NBA in general has shown an overall reluctance to punish players and most definitely would not do so until and unless they are found guilty by the criminal justice system. The commissioner can theoretically suspend or ban Bridges but chances of that happening is slim unless he's found guilty (and head to jail). Then it gives the commish the easy out of saying "well, yeah, his contract is void as a result due to ban from the NBA (blah, blah)".

There are clauses in players contracts regarding general conduct but barring a conviction, expect the Players Association to fight tooth and nail to prevent that from happening.
