Celtics Sign Justin Jackson, Jake Layman, Denzel Valentine

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Sep 15, 2022 12:37 pm

The Boston Celtics have signed Justin Jackson, Jake Layman and Denzel Valentine. All three are expected to have signed non-guaranteed, training camp contracts.

Jackson appeared in seven NBA games between the Celtics and Phoenix Suns last season. Jackson also played in 28 games for the Texas Legends of the G League. Jackson averaged 22.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists for the Legends.

Layman spent the last three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Massachusetts native averaged 2.4 points in 6.8 minutes per game last season. Layman also played for the Portland Trail Blazers for three seasons.

Valentine played in 24 NBA games with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Utah Jazz. The veteran wing also played in 12 games for the Maine Celtics of the G League. Valentine averaged 14.6 points, 10.3 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game in the G League.

Totally get that the Celtics need to work out a legit wing to see who can make the roster. My frustration; however, is waiting until free agent scrap heap time to address this. Boston has a lot of reliance on Brown and Tatum, but do not have another wing who is at least 6'4 that you can play in a regular season, let alone playoffs.

The Brogdan/White/Smart/Prichard tandem is good for point guard level and some spot playing at 2. If Brown or Tatum aren't available, in foul trouble or want to be mixed in as a small ball 4 lineups, things get grim quick off the bench. The 2010 Celtics had this same issue magnified in the finals. Pierce and Ray Allen were the only ones really capable of playoff rotation minutes. Whenever the team even threw Tony Allen in (who I love, but is 6'4 AND didn't do much on O), the unit suffered. Boston needs a legit 3rd wing badly.

With Gallo out they need a few cheap guys off the bench who have been able to play nba rotation minutes at certain points.
