Blake Griffin, Celtics Agree To Fully Guaranteed One-Year Deal

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Sep 30, 2022 4:12 pm

Blake Griffin has agreed a one-year, fully guaranteed deal with the Boston Celtics.

Griffin spent the past season and a half with the Brooklyn Nets.

Griffin will give Boston depth in the frontcourt following the injuries to Robert Williams III and Danilo Gallinari.

The Celtics now have 11 fully guaranteed contracts on their roster, though that number does not include Al Horford's mostly guaranteed deal.

Griffin averaged 6.4 points and 4.1 rebounds across 56 games (24 starts) this past season for the Nets.

I would have taken Melo over Blake to fill that role. Melo's a far better shooter.

...and a much worse passer, which is actually quite important in the Celtics' system from that position.

The third best important player in a team that battled for the ring, and who was the most important one in many games, has a partially guaranteed contract...
Then some tools in the league have astonishing contracts...

But it's not like he had 1M only guaranteed...
On his contract (signed with PHI), his last season of 26.5M (2022-23) was guaranteed for 14.5M
But he had two incentives : reaching the NBA Finals pushing it to 19.5M, and winning the title pushing it to 26.5M
He earned first incentive so he's at 19.5M guaranteed if BOS waive him in the season.

Strange thing is that BOS said before the NBA Finals that winning or not the title, they would fully guarantee his contract because they were already so happy with his impact on the team. And it seems they didn't do it, at least for now
