Luka Doncic Has 'Strongly Indicated' Desire For Mavericks To Upgrade Roster By Deadline

Luka Doncic has "strongly indicated" he would like the Dallas Mavericks to upgrade their roster via trade before the February 9th deadline, sources tell Tim MacMahon of ESPN.

Doncic has not shown a desire to be involved in personnel matters in the past.

The Mavericks, however, still owe a first rounder to the New York Knicks as part of the Kristaps Porzingis deal.

The Mavericks lost Jalen Brunson to the Knicks in free agency last offseason after they declined the opportunity to sign him to a four-year, $55 million extension. 

Doncic can become a free agent in 2026 and MacMahon has previously stated that the Mavericks have a two-year window to prove they can build a contender around him.

Good. The Mavs got rid of two 20ppg scorers in Jalen Brunson and Kristaps Porzingis, and never upgraded them. Luka will be playing for another team before he exits his prime.

Mavs will have to overpay for an asset.

Trade market is all jacked up from this summer too. Also, Consider the teams that may be trading players (Raptors and Jazz) have front offices that will demand a lot then you have a recipe for an overpay.

Also with the West being so close, some teams will get desperate for that last piece and fork up multiple picks or a FRP without protections.

Myles Turner is likely very available and I think he would fit very well with Luka. It would seem like Dallas would need to pull in another team somehow because I don't see Dallas having the assets to get a deal done.
