Suns Have Informed Teams They'll Take On Salary In Trades

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jan 20, 2023 1:43 pm

Matt Ishbia attended his first Phoenix Suns game since announcing he's buying the team from Robert Sarver. That was seen a first step towards transition to Ishbia's ownership of the team.

Another big change is that Phoenix has told rival teams that they are willing to move a first-round pick in trade talks to improve the team. In addition, the Suns have let teams know that they will take on salary ahead of the trade deadline on February 9.

In recent weeks, it was suggested that Sarver would need to approve any deals that put money on the Suns books. Now, it seems that Phoenix GM James Jones has the go-ahead to make whatever moves he feels can improve the Suns chances this season.

That's a strange thing to announce even if it is true. You take away some of your own leverage by announcing that.

It's an announcement that it is business as usual given their unique ownership situation. So now they are saying we are in play like any other team so teams will call them or include them in their scenarios.

Just for accuracy's sake, the new owner's first name is Mat, not Matt.

Correct.

However, they're basically only meeting the minimum standard to make a significant trade. Every other would-be contender has already brought that level of commitment to the trading table, and in a seller's market, that's not going to yield results for Phoenix.

They didn't "announce" it. The information came from rival teams.

Teams make it sound like their FRP is of value. In today's market you need 4 FRP to get an overpaid one dimensional player. With one FRP, best bet is an over the hill undersized scoring guard like Eric Gordon.
