I was under the impression he would have wanted the Spurs coaching gig once Coach Pop retired.

Pop’s like Bill Bellichek, I don’t think he’ll ever retire.

There are 30 NBA head coaching jobs. You don't wait for one specific opening.

And yet somehow this won't get brought up on ESPN like they did with Mazzulla / Udoka

Not all 30 teams are created equally. You want a job where you can have some say-so, and the ability to coach without having the GM/owner butting in. The Spurs have not changed a head coach since 1999 or so, the next closet team is probably the Warriors, it was the Mavs, but Coach Rick and the Mavs parted ways two seasons ago.

The Spurs havent changed coaches in 24 years for three reasons: Duncan, winning and Pop. They already lost Duncan and stopped winning... the moment Pop retires they will be just like all 29 other teams.

Quin Snyder is a good coach. He will remain a HC as long as he is successful. If he does a good job in ATL but the organization implodes, he'll take the next job. I personally would rather be coaching that group in ATL over the team in SAS. They are a lot further away from winning.
