Cavs Interested In Re-Signing Caris LeVert

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Mar 22, 2023 12:22 pm

When the Cleveland Cavaliers traded for Caris LeVert ahead of the 2022 NBA trade deadline, it wasn't just to aid in a playoff push for that season. The Cavs traded for LeVert with intentions of keeping him Cleveland long-term.

Despite opportunities to trade LeVert ahead of this season's trade deadline, Cleveland held onto the wing scorer. Now, with LeVert set to become an unrestricted free agent, the Cavaliers would like to re-sign him to a multi-year deal.

Playing in a more high-powered lineup, LeVert has seen his shots drop, but his efficiency rise. LeVert is averaging 11.9 points, his lowest since his rookie season, but LeVert is shooting a career-best 37.6% on three-pointers. He's also adding a solid 3.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 30 minutes per game, mostly off the Cavs bench.

no one should be accusing the CLE front office of being particularly bright

in this case they've backed themselves into a corner salary wise and basically have to resign him for the slot to use.

Here's hoping GM's around the league value LeVert like fans do, because he's doing almost everything the Cavs hoped he could do and has been playing very well since the trade deadline lapsed.

People worried about how he'd fit, but he's been part of very few negative lineups. Lineups with both Garland and Mitchell work, and his only player pairs below +3.9 are when he's playing with Love and interestingly Rubio.

He's been part of why the Cavs have been able to still win games when Garland or Mitchell missed time which is valuable in and of itself, and he's been playing much better since the trade deadline passed. Go figure.

But there's a reason he hasn't been extended - he's surely hoping to make more in free-agency than whatever the Cavs may have offered, or perhaps he just wants more years than an extension can run. Understandable given he's 28 and looking to maximize what's left of his prime years.

So by all means, keep those offers low. I imagine the Cavs would be very happy to pay Caris the 4/$72M that Collin Sexton eventually accepted from the Jazz.

You're pretty critical of the guy who may very well win executive of the year this season.
