Doc Rivers After Joel Embiid's 52-Point Night: The MVP Race Is Over

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Apr 5, 2023 12:49 pm

Joel Embiid may have sewn up the MVP award in a dominating performance, as he led the Philadelphia 76ers to victory over the Boston Celtics. Embiid scored 52 points on 20-of-25 shooting, grabbed 13 rebounds, dished out six assists and blocked two shots in the Sixers 103-101 victory.

In the eyes of his coach, that should have been enough for Embiid to wrap up the MVP award.

"There were so many things that we did wrong. But what we did right was Joel Embiid. The MVP race is over. Tonight, we couldn’t make shots. The man just scored half our points in an NBA game," Doc Rivers said. "And I’m biased but the MVP race is over."

Embiid was leading the tightly contested three-way MVP race as of the latest, and final, straw poll conducted by ESPN. The Sixers center led Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo atop tentative awards ballots, which don't need to be finalized until the completion of the regular season.

Just like your coaching career is over in a few short months, Doc.

Would Pop make that declaration?
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

sheesh. i'm embarrassed for doc in engaging this game. just let the voters do what they do. you can even suggest your guy is doing MVP things. i can't think of who would argue against that. but there's no need to engage the competition discussion. smh.
RIP magnumt

welcome home, thibs.

LOL. MVP is literally all Embiid cares about. He can hug his trophy when the sixers are knocked out of the second round again.

WWPD? :dontknow:

The short answer: "No". He wouldn't have to because if Pop was coaching that squad they would be winning more games.

The long answer: "Why does it mater what any other human would say? What does Pop have to do with the situation? At what point did it become wrong for a coach use the media to publicly build up the confidence of their players?... So, maybe yes, if Pop was in that position and thought it would help... but he isn't."

The only award that matters Doc is the NBA finals trophy. Sixers better win or your coaching career will be OVER

It was just meant to be a variation on when Doc angrily responded to a reporter “Would you ask Pop that question?” during a presser.

Has there been a more overrated coach in the past 20 years than Doc Rivers? I would have to think maybe Mike D'antoni.

I wonder if he can actually carry the responsibility. He is very, very good but I suspect Giannis will keep whooping his ass.

Doc rivers can not make adjustments, every second half opposing teams counter his garbage offense and the lead dwindles down to the point where embiid or harden have to bail out this dude with there brilliance late in 4th quarters. Joe mazulla a rookie head coach is already a better tactician and in game adjuster than doc rivers. That game last night had no reason being as close as it was with brown and rob Williams being out and Tatum sucking all game.

Doc will get outcoached at about the 4th game of a series and harden will be scapegoated

I always felt like doc was a bit overatted as head coach for every franchise he's been with. He's always talking about the personal drama going on. He said the clippers team was heavily flawed after they loss to Denver. Or stepping down before getting fired. He needs to realize he sucks and who can't take kg, ray Allen, peirce, rondo to win a championship with all of them in there prime. Greg pop would lead this Sixes team to the finals.

He's hurt often in the playoffs. If he's 100 percent they can do something. It's more about his help. He has Maxey Milton Harden and Harris and tucker.its either this year or never. Harden looks to be falling off from his Houston days.

Harden had a great year and embiid has the most help of any other player this year.. Also the other years he went out he had plenty of help too like butler harris simmons ( when simmons was playing well) also the year they were the number 1 seed and lost to atlanta everyone blames simmons but embiid was part of that and simmons was plus 1 in the knock out game so he wasnt a loser on the court but embiid was and Atlanta come on.. Embiid needs to step up like you said the time is now.. That said Doc is a terrible coach had great teams ans underperformed

If this is what embiid is really chasing and not a ring, not sure if I'll look at him the same.

He's the only coach I know that can live off ONE NBA chip, and get jobs. He's done nothing and this year he will get out coached.
