Lakers Have Had Internal Discussions On Trading For Trae Young

The Los Angeles Lakers season ended in a four-game sweep in the Western Conference Finals at the hands of the Denver Nuggets. Now, the Lakers are figuring out how to pick up the pieces and move forward.

One option for Los Angeles is to trade for high-profile point guard to team with LeBron James (if he doesn't retire) and Anthony Davis. One player the team has had internal discussion about is Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks.

Young is set to make $40 million next season. The Lakers could send the Hawks several players in a sign-and-trade deal to match salary in a trade for Young.

Los Angeles is also expected to consider a sign-and-trade for Kyrie Irving. That would be difficult to pull off, as it would result in a hard cap for Los Angeles, but it's possible the Lakers believe they can fill out their roster with minimum signings around a James, Davis, Irving and Austin Reaves core.

Why does the LA FO continually embarrass themselves with these leaks?

LA FO- Hey Atlanta, would you take a pick and a swap for Trae?

ATL FO- No

LA FO- No? Okay…

I like it. Sign and trade Russell, Beasley, Bamba, Vando, 17th pick for Young. Re-sign Reaves and Rui.

G - Young
G - Reaves
F - James
F - Rui
C - AD

Fill out the bench with fillers and vet minimums.

If they keep Beasley at 16M, then the Lakers have 7 players under contract for next season and their salaries total 108M (86M+ of that is just Lebron and AD). That doesn't include RFA Rui Hachimura and his 19M cap hold. The salary cap for next season is 134M, so LA can't absorb Trae's 40M in exchange for picks -- they have to send back big salary. And those are just the financial hurdles. We haven't even gotten to the obstacle that the Hawks aren't going to treat Trae Young like a negative asset; they will want more than just scraps.

If we're talking S+T this would assume the Hawks would want one of these guys for Young: DLo, Schroeder, Gabriel, Brown, etc...
^Good luck...

In the entire 2700 word Athletic Article, Trae's name was mentioned 3x total across just two sentences:
"For what it’s worth, Kyrie Irving and Trae Young, two All-Star-level point guards, were both sitting courtside in Los Angeles for the second time this postseason. Young, like James and Davis, is a Klutch client. The Lakers have had internal discussions about what a hypothetical trade offer for Young could look like this summer, according to multiple league sources not authorized to speak publicly."
^Nothing in the article said a word about S+T.

This is unrealistic.

Why not just trade for Curry or Doncic if we're just making up fake scenarios?

As bad as Trae Young's deal is, Atlanta isn't taking that offer.

Beasley will be a FA for sure. Without his contract they have no shot at matching salary. The Lakers also don't have enough talent or picks that would interest ATL, including S&T possibilities. Why would they want DLo?

Sounds BS to me. 1. Trae isn't their answer, and 2. calling other teams while in the middle of getting swept?

Ah, the old "bench for Shaq" trade proposal. Maybe you can throw in some later second rounders too to make it even more appealing.

please elaborate?

He's been to the playoffs 3x.

first time he only led his team to the ECF and two games within the finals. Might've gotten there if not for a ref's foot. Averaged 29 and 9.5 assists.

Second time he was horrible in first round loss to #1 seed that put 100% of their focus on stopping Trae. Trae was also without two starters for that series.

third time he first helped destroy the now legendary Heat in Miami in he play in game. Then he went and gave Boston a fight. Started slow and got better every game. Finished that series with a 29 pts and 10 assists.

So he's had two great playoffs and one bad one. How is he very meh? You know a lot of other players under 25 averaging 29/10 in two playoff runs?

Nice cherry-picking, well done.

1. Averages 26.4 ppg on 40/29/85 splits, absolutely atrocious for such a volume.
2. 9.0 assists against 4.4 turnovers, not too bad, but definitely "meh", just like I wrote in my first post.
3.
that put 100% of their focus on stopping Trae
Well, that's certainly a shocker, because no other first option has ever experienced anything like that.
4.
Then he went and gave Boston a fight
No, he didn't.

you accuse me of cherry picking yet you want to use his one terrible series as an anchor to pull down the rest of his stats.

Fact is he had 1 amazing playoff run, one terrible series and then he rebounded with a excellent showing vs Boston where, yes, he gave them a fight. Took them to 6 and won a game on Boston floor with amazing 38/13 performance.

Save your efficiency stats for the regular season where that stuff matters, playoffs are a different animal.

Also please name the other players who have taken their teams to the conference finals without another all star. And did it before the age of 24.

Keep throwing on that agenda which only shows you never watch the Hawks and get your info from RealGm group think.

ATL better be smarter than bringing in D’Angelo Russell in a sign-and-trade!

I'm no using his one awful series, I'm literally using his PO averages.
And I'm not gonan ommit his godawful efficiency numbers just ebcause they don't fit your narrative.

Luka last year. I'm pretty sure there are a few more players, I'm too lazy to do the research at the moment.

These Laker trade rumors are just atrocious. Its one star after another yet every story doesnt even hint at what they would give up. So the Lakers would like to pair a third star with Lebron, AD, and Reeves….Sure, Im sure teams like Atlanta are chomping at the big to trade away their best player for scraps.
