Guaranteed Money For Second Round Picks Up 29.4 Percent From 2022 To 2023

The NBA added a third Two-Way contract as part of its new collective bargaining agreement, which created some level of skepticism among agents that it would negate a new second round exception for teams.

The league previously required teams to use a salary cap exception to sign second round picks to deals longer than two years. Now, second round picks can sign for up to four guaranteed years at the minimum. This rule change will essentially eliminate situations like the Dallas Mavericks with Jalen Brunson when they didn't have a team option for Year 4.

The total amount of guaranteed money for second round picks has increased from $36.4 million in the 2022 draft to $47.1 million in 2023, an increase of 29.4 percent.
