Chris Paul Expected To Start For Warriors

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Sep 12, 2023 1:02 pm

On a recent episode of the Good Word with Goodwill podcast from Yahoo! Sports, veteran ESPN/Andscape reporter Marc Spears dropped some intel on Chris Paul's fit with his new team. Spears told Vince Goodwill that Paul is expected to start for the Golden State Warriors this season.

"I do expect him to start. And I think it's like five-minute spurts," Spears said. "I don't know that they really want his minutes to be high, but I think they're gonna try it. I could be wrong, but that's the gist I'm getting. This isn't an opinion that he's expected to start. It's what I'm hearing. He's never not started in his career."

In his 18 NBA seasons, Chris Paul has played in 1,214 regular season games and started in every one of them. The veteran point guard has played in an additional 149 games in the playoffs and has started all of those games, as well.

The Warriors regular starting lineup features Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and Kevon Looney. All five of those players are returning to Golden State for this season, which means one would be bumped to a reserve role if Paul starts.

You bump Wiggins, or Green, in that line up. Depending on how you want to open up against that night's rival team.

Warriors are about to have some serious issues if they let this man start. He's a bench player now, people have to stop acting as though he's the same guy from 5-10 years ago, who was putting up 18 & 10, he's not. He's 38 going on 39, defenses ignore him, and his defense hasn't been that tier for a while now.

He can still shoot, so defences aren't going to ignore him. He's also got an insane basketball IQ. Defence has slowed for sure, but he's not washed yet.

He averaged 14/4/9 in 32 MPG last season. He was 5th in AST and 5th in AST/TO. People thought he was washed when he went to HOU (2017), and washed again when he went to OKC(2019). I guess if people keep saying it they will eventually be right.

CP3 has always played under the rim and I won't count him out until the retirement announcement.

I mean it's not surprising. We are in the position-less era of basketball now.

Until you come to the World cup and get your ass kicked in the paint.

I give it 12 games and he’s coming off the bench.

They may have defensive issues against bigger/faster backcourts... but they will be deadly on the offensive end.

Looney averaged under 24 MPG last season. He can do that from the bench. I expect CP3 will average at least 28 MPG which means he will inevitably have to spend some time on the floor with the starters, so why not at the jump? Besides, Steph plays more like a SG anyway. I would guess that it will be CP3 and Draymond that they stagger to keep play making on the floor at all times.

Looney is going to be bench not because it's the best thing for the team but because he's strong emotionally and won't become a problem if he doesn't start

Usually people with hamstring issues like to go from warm ups directly into the game. Agree with other that it isnt the best but should be fine- as nobody ( players coaches ) seems to care at all about the regular season

Yeah, if you're going small ball off the top.

Maybe Paul is a token starter for a handful of minutes, but he and Steph are staggered through most of the game.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Expect a lot of CP3 using all 8s to walk the ball up and then initiate action with about 9s left on the shot clock

   "He can still shoot..." If that isn't the funniest thing I've heard in a while. Guess you didn't watch the Clippers and Nuggets series where almost everyone was daring him to shoot the 3. Defenses don't respect him anymore.
