The Pistons startet their rebuild from nothing. Something rarely any NBA team has to do. Most start or fasten their rebuild by trading away a Star (ORL, HOU, OKC, POR, WAS, BKN, UTA ...)
The Pistons are also one of the few teams (actually the only one i can remember) in the NBA, that never beat their lottery odds. Other than their #1-pick, they fell to 7/5/5 which was about the worst possible they could fall each season.
If it wasn't for Zion Williamson, they would easily lead the league in "most games missed by a #1 pick in his first 2 seasons" over the last decade.
Detroit is one of the most undesired FA-destionations in the whole league. No sunny weather, No beach. No glamour. No tax-friendly state laws. But still big enough to have local franchises in all 3 other major sports to compete with on sales and endorsments.
Under those circumstances it would need an absolute genius of a GM and a top-notch coach to do better, than they did. Unfortunately their GM is rather mediocre and so was their coach. So where should the improvement come from?
They tried to adress at least one of those areas by giving the bag to Monty Williams - let's see if that gives them any boost on their rebuild.
