Mark Cuban To Control Mavs' Basketball Operations 'Forevermore'

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Dec 1, 2023 3:31 pm

Despite agreeing to sell a majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks to the Adelson family, Mark Cuban reportedly has no plans to exit the basketball side of the business in what is an unprecedented ownership maneuver.

"I don't know exactly what the language is in the purchase agreement, but one thing I have been told, and the exact word I heard is Cuban will have basketball operations for quote forevermore," said ESPN's Tim MacMahon on the Brian Windhorst podcast.

"I assume that is agreed to in writing."

Cuban, 65, has increasingly shifted his attention away from the business side of the Mavericks in recent years while remaining involved in basketball operations. However, Cuban has even taken a lesser role in basketball operations since hiring Nico Harrison to replace Donnie Nelson.

For the Adelsons, they appear to be more focused on their aspirations of building an arena and hotel in downtown Dallas while lobbying to change Texas state laws to permit gambling.

MacMahon also suggested that the decline of regional sports networks and how that will impact the revenue of sports teams played a role in Cuban's timing to sell a majority stake.

Where would they be if Luka wasn't basically gifted to them both by teams with the first two picks and Atlanta. He's not exactly a master Basketball mind.

They weren't gifted Luka, the other teams didn't think Luka was going to be as good as he is now. Everyone was talking about how slow he was but the Mavs took him anyway.

Now I do agree that he isn't one of the greatest minds in basketball, but business wise he turned the team 180 degrees since he bought them. His antics are too much at times, at least for me, but they won a championship and he took chances on Dirk and Luka and they panned out. He takes care of his players off the court as well. He also just more than 10x his initial investment, while still having part ownership and full control. Yet again, a very smart business decision.

Agreed. I think he a made a masterful deal. For one, I think he sold at the top but did so while basically maintaining the job he enjoys with an ability to buy back in. Im curious to see if he makes a presidential run in 28 as I think he would have a ton of support from all over the spectrum.

That was the problem in the first place: you're not a basketball expert and never were.
