Tom Thibodeau has been a lot place in his NBA coaching career. He knows when he wants to stay somewhere. Now, Thibodeau hopes to stay with the New York Knicks for a while longer.

“That’s something that my agent will take care of,” Thibodeau said about extending his contract. “The Knicks have been great to me. So, this is where I want to be.”

Thibodeau has one year remaining on the five-year deal he signed with New York ahead of the 2020-21 season. Sources expect that the Knicks will do what they can to extend Thibodeau this summer, likely on a deal in the range of $10 million per season.

Despite criticism that he plays his players too many minutes, several Knicks defended Thibodeau. Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and others all expressed hope that New York would take care of their coach with a contract extension.

He's the best coach the Knicks have had in decades. He should be extended.

He should be extended by two years only with a team option for a third year. That’ll keep him in NY for three years guaranteed. If Knicks don’t make the Finals at all during those three years, then he should be fired because NY teams always find a way to buy the best players.

Best coach sure. However, he never adjusts on the fly, especially during playoffs. not a chip-level coach, great reg. season coach I agree

thibs just changed the lineup to a 4 guard lineup 2 games ago. he constantly made ingame adjustments to defensive schemes and also on offense to get guys open.. are you watchign the games or just yapping what stephen a and shannon say on espn?

thibs definitley needs to be extended and held. theres no other coaches out there to get anyway.

stop running with old narratives and actually watch the games.

I beleive that without Thibs Doc doesn't have a ring.

Many coaches with rings are right place, right time, right health, right roster situations.

Is Malone a better coach than Thibs? Budenholzer? In both cases I think you could argue no. In fact, I know the world loves Lue but I think Thibs has done more with less.

Also, I agree adjusting in a series is what makes a coach great. I would say Thibs' post season in NY has been marred with injury and when you are relying on Noel and Bullock or Burke and Precious (each of these players I like(d) and still think we should have resigned Reggie and not signed Fournier. But when you're adjustments rely on less talented players to execute, sometimes it's best not to ask for changes from bench players and players who don;t typically play many minutes.

Looked to me like he's getting the best from his auxiliary players and the team attitude seemed fantastic through an injury plagued playoffs. Could be Brunsons leadership but I don't see why they wouldn't keep thibs, if anything they overachieved with all the injuries they had. No need to disrupt this team right now with a new coach.

We're <1 calendar year from Pistons/Gores signing Monty Williams to a 6y $78.5M guaranteed contract PLUS 2 additional team option years that would push it to $100M.

Good luck selling Thibs' management team on 2 years

Nobody here thinks he’s at least partially responsible for a lot of the injuries? He plays players big minutes.

No, that's just a media storyline. None of these were fatigue injuries. There's plenty of time outs and breaks, if they can do 40 they can do 48. Id say the playing time was a result of the injuries not the other way around.

The Knicks FO will extend Thibs - duration is the question.

A 3 year extension with team option for the 3rd year makes sense.

Yes he has established a culture and the players are buying in ( despite heavy usage ) -- but can he take this team to the next level?

Otherwise, if objectively Thibs has plateaued with this roster -- there maybe an alternative. Should Ty Lue's contract extension talks fumble this offseason the Knicks should pivot.
