OG Anunoby Could Entertain Offers From Teams Beyond Knicks In Free Agency

There is some speculation around the league that OG Anunoby could consider other franchises in addition to the New York Knicks, reports Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports

The Knicks acquired Anunoby during the season via trade with the combination of assets sent out and his presence as a CAA client has created an expectation that he would eventually re-sign. But Anunoby's situation is believed to be somewhat less certain than his former teammate Pascal Siakam with the Indiana Pacers, who is strongly expected to re-sign.

Anunoby has a $19.9 million player option for the 24-25 season with the Knicks that he is expected to decline.

During his half season with the Knicks, Anunoby was highly productive but had multiple injury stints.

I really like the player. Problem has always been being able to rely on him not being injured. This has been his problem all the way back to his days at IU.

His agent is the son of Knicks President Leon Rose. It would be an absolute shocker if he signs anywhere else. If a report comes out that he's fired his agent then the writing on the wall but until then, I don't believe any of those reports.

Translation - knicks better back up that Brinks Truck.

Can't really blame him. He's obviously made a lot of money already, but he's 27 when the contract starts, so this is probably going to be his big score.

It'd be hilarious if he declined the option and subsequently signed with the Raptors.

Ultimate trojan horse move. Dolan would lose his mind.

This reminds me of the classic joke:

And he signed with the team that offered him the most money.

Yes, but also standard 'you know you guys have to pay me, right?' move from OG.

It wouldn't be a shocker at all if the Knicks aren't going to pay him as much as another team will. The whole reason to have connected agents is to get you more money, not attach yourself to relationships and systems of favors that will cost you cold $.

OG would not risk season ending hamstring injury / surgery to get back on the court in Game 7 if he did not intend to re-sign.

Knicks would not have traded away their young talented draft picks ( RJ, Quickley ) if they did not intend to make OG part of the future long term.

OG's agent is Leon Rose's son

This speculation is nothing more than rival agents / rival teams ( * 76ers ) putting pressure on their FA targets & opposing teams.

For sure, he's gonna take whatever the best deal is for him. But the context of that relationship, plus the trade that was just made to acquire him, to me, would suggest there has already been extensive discussions on the framework of the deal that both teams are agreeing on. If the Knicks are just saying, go out and explore offers and we will come and match anything.

Probably gonna work something out, but I don't think the Knicks would or should have said anything more at trade time than 'we're excited to have you on board now and plan to have you around well into the future.' The experiment could've gone badly, he could've got injured, Brunson could've got injured and the team in shambles, etc, neither side had any reason to make an unbreakable commitment at that time. And ownership might still be saying 'I don't know, this dude can't stay healthy and we look just one big piece away, plus everyone thinks a full max for him is a lot even if healthy--I'm really not sure about emptying the coffers here.'

I'm also remembering Knicks fans on here insisting OG was definitely gonna sign for a reasonable number because of the Rose connections. You're not saying that but I've maybe still got them in mind.

My salary comps for him would be:
Jerami Grant 32per over 5
Khris Middleton 31per over 3
Draymond Green 25per over 4

I expect him to get more than all of these guys, probably something around 35-38 million per season over 4 years. Do you think he'll get more than that?

That sounds about right, but FA market's of course always unpredictable. And I agree he should easily command more than those other 3.

My point's not that deep, just don't think his agent's going to say 'another solid team is offering more, but we'll take less because it's NY baby' or 'my dad's cool and so is NY, let's be chill and work something out.' I think it's unreasonable and unrealistic to think he'd sacrifice more than a million or two per year because of the NY factor, and I don't think it makes sense to think that they worked out a specific contract extension right at trade time. Unless NY's going to open FA ready to give him a full max (which is possible), I think both sides will be doing regular negotiations.

Kinda repeating what i just said but what do you actually think that means? That OG will take a worse deal cuz of his agent's family ties? That father and son already agree to a # that might be well less than OG could get in the open market?

They still gotta do the business stuff, and OG's agent would be pretty derelict not to see how big the offers from other teams are.

It means Leon wouldn’t have done the trade if he didn’t have intel that OG resigning would be a strong possibility. Sure there’s the business aspect. But I would give OG leaving the Knicks in FA a 2% chance
