Spurs Looking To Compete Now; Open To Trading Draft Picks

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Jun 5, 2024 1:32 pm

On a recent episode of The Ringer's NBA Draft Show, ESPN's Jonathan Givony shared some thoughts on the San Antonio Spurs. Givony said he's heard that the Spurs are open to moving their draft picks, as well as any players not named Victor Wembanyama or Devin Vassell.

"Everything I hear is that they want to be competitive next year, they want to be in the playoffs. They’re not looking to make this a two- to three-year process, where they’re in the lottery again next year. For right now, they want to be competitive next year and that’s why I think they’re going to be aggressive with those picks," Givony said.

"I've heard nobody in the roster is untouchable except Victor and Devin Vassell."

Givony also added that he's heard available players are interested in playing in San Antonio because of the presence of the young superstar big man.

“Every free agent, every veteran guard, they all want to play with Victor Wembanyama," Givony said.

1. I think this means one of the Hawks PGs will be there.
2. Karl Towns would make a lot of sense as a bridge #2 option for the time being.
3. Sam Presti looks like [EDIT: an evening bigger] a moron for sitting out the deadline. [EDIT: We're seeing it with Luka right now, give Victor 4.5 credible teammates and he's going to burn the league to the ground]

This draft seems so weak, but I wonder which player might make everybody regret not keeping their pick

It will be an interesting draft. I don't think teams should be giving up anything valuable for a pick/s in this draft. Future draft picks would be more intriguing, but Spurs are expected to be good in the future so there are probably better future picks out there.

For those saying this draft sucks, remember people said the same about the 2020 draft and said the 2021 draft was a generational draft. Now its looking like 2020 was the better draft for top talent.
Ant, Hali, Ball, Maxey all borderline superstars

Vassell, Bane, McDaniels, all borderline all stars.

Yeah, why not? You can’t double Vic with two bigs while KAT is on the floor, and what’s the point of doubling Vic with anyone under 6’9”? Add two competent shooters and two competent defenders to Vassell and you’re basically done.

Again, Kat? He's a solid player but he doesn't belong with Vic.

Again, why not? Just wondering what specific criticisms you have of the pairing, or what you think is a better fit. The partnership with Rudy has been a defensive success, and Vic won’t have any problems covering for KAT whether the Spurs are blitzing or dropping against the PnR. On offense, they can space for each other in 5 out or play high-low.

The Spurs have picks and cap room, the Wolves have neither.
