Wow how surprising the LAL management being cheap. Why even go down this path if without $100M on the table they had no shot at him. Jeannie Buss has been notoriously cheap of late and this is just not a good look imo. Didn’t Detroit pay Monty Williams 6/$78.5M coming off being fired a few years ago? Like how wouldn’t that be the floor right there?

He is making 32m over six years with his current job and he is saying no to a job that pays him double.

When you're an adult who is happy, change isn't as enticing (especially if you're already rich).

I really gained a lot of respect for him today! This was a very mature decision.

$32 million invested in just a boring S&P500 fund will be growing at $3million per year. Essentially forever. The guy is rich enough that he doesn't have to take a job just because it pays more. More money isn't going to improve his life of make him happier.

And frankly, the next laker coach isn't lasting 5 years. At some point, Lebron retires and the team rebuilds. It's incredibly, incredibly rare for a coach to survive that transition in the NBA. Sure, he'll still get the money, but NBA coaching gigs are rough ride.

1) 6yr/$70m is not cheap; it's an overpay for someone that hasn't coached a game in the NBA. (This ain't college.)
2) Monty has a track record of being a great developmental coach in the NBA. (This ain't college.)
3) He had 3 years and 20m+ left on his previous deal which is negated by his new deal. So he's really getting about $10m per season.
4) People talk like all things are equal. They aren't. DET is (currently) the dregs of the NBA. They had to pay a premium to get a proven coach. The Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in the NBA and LA has long summers and warm winters. Everyone needs to stop comparing each and every coaching deal to Monty's deal in DET. It was unique in many ways. He could be collecting $7m per while sitting on a beach somewhere.

Money isn’t the whole package. At UConn he has full control of all aspects of the basketball program: he has access to the best high school talent in the world and 2 chips to use as recruiting tools. His players regularly get broad coverage, good development and a real good chance to be drafted so he’s getting top prospects to work with.

In LA he’s hamstrung by a poorly put together roster, middling talent in the draft range, and limited ability with the salary cap to improve the roster.

John Calaperi and Billy Donovan also came to the NBA highly rated and have struggled. Better for Hurley to wait for a better opportunity.

I don’t really follow college ball, but it’s a very short season. Nothing like 82 games. Maybe even as low as in the30’s so less than half. Short playoffs, too. Not at all comparable.

No surprise here.

Not sure why any established coach would want to leave their comfy gig to deal with Bron and his Klutch circus.

Let the JJ rumors resume in full force...

This is definitely a cheap offer this had to be 7 year 100mil or 10 years 130mil.. This offer was not what they put out there.. Detroit still pays monty that full money and lakers couldnt beat that? Come on this is silly.

Exactly it was a bad look for LAL reporting $100M and then finding out it was $70M. It’s amateur hour. Also you act as if this LA JOB is so wanted by the masses. Explain to me why Mike Budenholzer didn’t even consider them? That Monty deal was large and as a two time title in UCONN I would want to be top 3-5 in coaches salary to even consider leaving. If not he’d be smart to sit and wait for Thibs to be on the outs of NYK. DOLAN will off him the moon

Definitely a cheap offer. Hurley is an elite coach and more decorated than most NBA coaches already. You dont take THE biggest coach in college basketball make a big spectacle of it and offer the guy less than top 5 money. Buss has this idea that LAL is an elite destination that Coaches should take less to coach for. They have no real assets, Bron is a bully to any coach they bring in and they are probably going to be forced to take Bronny. They are far away from competing again. Also dont forget when she wouldnt give Lue that extra year. So cheap!
