The Boston Celtics won the 2024 NBA Finals on Monday. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that a key member of the Celtics will soon receive the richest contract in NBA history.

Boston is expected to offer Tatum a five-year, $315 million supermax extension. This contract will top the one Celtics teammate Jaylen Brown signed a year ago.

The Celtics are also expected to try to work out a contract extension with Derrick White. All of Boston's top-eight rotation players are under contract through the 2024-25 season.

Dude not worth it. He is a regular season player only. When the lights get bright he shrinks.

I’m sure it will coincide with the salary cap going up ridiculously after the new tv deals so that Celtics have plenty of capspace to add more awesome players. Get used to Celtic title run folks, at least next 5 years.

Some reminders for the Hawks and Heat fans who have to cope with this team for years to come:

Jayson Tatum holds the all time game 7 scoring record of 51 points -- higher than Jordan, West, Kareem, Lebron etc...

While down 3-2 on the road versus the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks, Jayson Tatum hung 46 on GIannis/Jrue and went on to crush them in game 7 (he also lit Miami up for 175 pts in a 7 game series victory in the next round).

At age 26, Tatum is already top-40 all-time in NBA career postseason points -- more points than Bill Russell, KG, Butler, Billups/Rip, Stockton, PG13, IT1, Jokic, Kyrie, Gasol, Moses, Oscar. He's more than halfway to catching both Shaq and Duncan in playoff points.

Tatum has higher career postseason shooting splits than Kobe Bryant.

Tatum's career playoff TS% higher than all these playoff media darlings: Kyrie Irving, PG13, Donovan Mitchell, Jalen Brunson, Klay Thompson, Trae Young.

Don't forget: everyone said the same about Jaylen Brown last season ("not worth it")

...And now the "guy who can't dribble left" is a Finals MVP who just put Kyrie and Luka in jail repeatedly during a 5-game blowout series.

Dude average 22pts, 7 rebounds and 7 assist in 11 NBA final games and is only 26 years old..and helped them win the chip this year..I would pay him this max, especially with the cap going up yearly for the next 10 years..

The Celtics will not have cap space at any point in the near future. The NBA and players association agreed to cap-smoothing. So the cap cannot raise more than 10% every year. A max contract like Brown and Tatum's raise by 8% every year.

They will not even be close to having salary cap space. They will likely be a 2nd apron team for a long time unless they start cutting salary. It doesn't sound like they plan to cut salary. Which is understandable since they already have a team full of talent.
