The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to trade Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second round picks to the Detroit Pistons.
The Mavericks entered the offseason prioritizing a trade of Hardaway in order to offer a significant portion of their $12.9 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception to Derrick Jones Jr.

Both teams won.
DAL saved about $12m (+tax) and have a similar (bench warmer) player that is young, easier to trade and a better defender.
DET got three 2nds for taking on expiring salary in a year they will be tanking and all they gave up is a player that they don't want.

Grimes looked like an up and commer in 22-23, shooting 38% from 3. Then he struggled and lost his starting spot to Donte 23-24. There might be reasons for his struggles. Maybe too much pressure, and dealing with injuries. If he can return to 22-23 form, he's a good pickup for Dallas.
I just wonder which is the real Grimes, the one that the Knicks didn't want to include in the trade for Donovan Mitchell in the 2023 off season, or the one who they used as salary cap filler 9 months later.
For Timmy Jr. What's the over/under that he'll break the 20 PPM mark for the Pistons. He'll be taking a boatload of 3s for them. I think he gets in the 20s for the first time in his career. Then he hits free agency with those numbers.

Grimes struggles were mental. Looked over his shoulder too much at DD when he was brought in to replace IQ. Unfortunate for Grimes. I was team Grimes all the way. He just couldn't get passed himself.

Pistons keep selling cap room too cheap. OKC and SA both consistently got protected firsts for their cap room.

Mavs won this trade. They got a trash player off the books for someone useful and enough off the books to sign DJJ.

I am struggling to think of the things Dennis Lindsey should actually get credit for on his resume besides obtaining Donovan Mitchell (not a minor feat).
Sorry, Pistons fans. Looks like you got another checked out Monty Williams-ass lemon that’s cashing your checks.
