The Utah Jazz turned down the New York Knicks' offer of two first-round picks for Walker Kessler, reported Ian Begley of SNY.
Begley adds that he does not know what protections the first-round picks had.
Kessler, who is currently with Utah's Summer League team, has two years remaining on his contract.

Not sure why they even start this negotiation. Anyway, at this point all the other teams in the league knows the Knicks are in desperate need of a center, prices will be very high.

It would make sense for a few teams including the knicks especially because of the contract knicks also owned heavily protected first rd picks that might not even convey

The only 1st round picks the Knicks can trade are (heavily) protected 1st round picks. They would likely have to move Deuce McBride to another team for 1st. But the original article did NOT say that the Knicks offered 2 1st round picks.

Detroit pick will convey in 2026 or 2027 for sure. The protections are low and Detroit is at this point already looking like the 9th or 10th best team in the East.
Washington pick is essentially going to become two picks in the low 30s unless the Wizards manage to get Cooper Flagg.

Maybe it was just pick swaps? NY is a better team so it would have almost no value.

The only picks NY can offer are teh Detroit and Washington pick swaps, which are unlikely to transfer in 2025, and have a pretty good chance of not transfering at all, turning into 3 2nd round picks (one of them becomes a 2nd, the other one becomes two 2nds - don't remember which is which).
So, these are pretty uninteresting first round picks (probably why these are the 2 Jersey didn't ask for), but if they do convey, they'll be in the top 12-18 range I would guess, depending on win totals for Detroit/Washington if they start to win. The potential range of these picks isn't bad, but the odds that they won't convey is a bummer.
Technically, NY could still offer 2026 and 2030 pick swaps (not that interesting) they have their 2026, 2028 & 2030 firsts, as you have to hold one every other year, Jersey already has their 2028 pick swap.
And they have quite a few 2nd rounders.

I'm looking forward to a Detroit-style pizza in 2027.

That should say protected picks.
I don't know if the Detroit pick is going to come over. 2026 or not, but I'm not super optimistic. 2025 seems highly unlikely. Washington too, though Washington's falls down to top 8 protected on the last year, but the Wiz are pretty bad.

I thought they were already the 9th or 10th best team in the East. What happened?

Rule number one, do not get in to a negotiation with Danny Ain’t. You are sure to get screwed. Just ask Isaiah Thomas.

Detroit was historically bad last year. I think the set a record for most consecutive losses. They should be better this year I think, but not by enough for the pick to transfer.
2026 or 2027 - maybe. But I'm not optimistic.
