Julius Randle, Knicks Not Rushing Extension Talks

Julius Randle became eligible to sign an extension at the beginning of August. However, neither the veteran forward nor the New York Knicks seem to be in a rush to get an extension signed.
However, Randle is excited about the Knicks additions this offseason. The 29-year-old believe that the team can be special after adding Mikal Bridges in a trade this summer.
Randle has two years left on the four-year extension he signed with New York in 2021. Randle could sign a three-year extension with the Knicks before the start of the season, if he picks up his player option for 2025-26. If Randle declines that option, he could sign up to a four-year extension through June 30.
Since joining New York in 2019, Randle has made the All-Star team three times. He was voted as the Most Improved Player in the 2020-21 season. Randle also made All-NBA teams in 2021 and 2023.

Julius Randle should absolutely be rushing extension talks. Fake stars aren’t getting paid anymore.

That really has no relevance as you have no idea what he's looking for and/or willing to take...nor what the Knicks are or aren't willing to give him. His "worth" to the Knicks as well as the Knicks fit for him moving forward is in a grey area (due to injuries and the significant influx of new teammates in the past year and through this past offseason). There's been glimpses of both Randle being of significant worth as well as the Knicks being a great fit which could push the needle (of what each side is willing to give and take) but nothing concrete. Problem is with Randle missing a good part of the end of last season and all of the playoff the glimpses have just been glimpses. It could be in the best interests of both parties to wait a bit and see how the season goes before the Knicks decide whether they may want to increase what they may want to give him as well as Randle possibly being willing to take less than what he's thinking now. FYI, Randle has already show he's willing to take less in exchange for security and being where he likes to be (see the current extension he signed). So if what you're implying is that Randle is looking for a max or else I'd say that's really not relevant.

First of all since when it was the norm to ask for an extension if you still have two years left ? Back in the day you completed your contract and then asked for a new one. Do you think the media is really just starting drama for nothing ? I would care more if he was in his final season and the season ended. Then we got something to talk about.

It's technically allowed is the thing. That's why Brunson signed the extension even though Brunson was originally signed after Randle current contract. Also Randle didn't ask for it. That's probably why he's not rushing into it. As a plus for the Knicks, Randle has already shown he's not one of those guys that is thinking "max or else" (he's already gone the Brunson like route of taking less). Randle's current deal was an extension that was generally viewed as a below market extension (given his MIP, 3 time all-star, 2 time all-nba resume). My guess is that both sides want to go into the season and see how things go before the Knicks decide to lock in Randle with another extension and Randle locks himself into being in NY.

Julius barely played last season. Knicks should wait until All Star Break to offer him the max. If he’s good and plays 90% of games, give it to him. If he sucks or gets hurt again, then let him pick up his player option and assess next season.

Celtics are probably the last team to pay everyone upfront. Julius at a max is not happening. He’s capped at Brunson salary or less on any extension. If somehow they win a title, everyone cashes in with their max as payback for success and the team just lives with the consequences as the guys age out. That’s basically what the Warriors did.

He played every game until a freak injury at the end of January.

It makes sense for both Randle and the Knicks for him to opt in and then extend of that next season. If he extends off his current salary, he can get a 4 year extension worth about $190M. If he waits a year he can play for $31M next season and get a 3 year extension worth around $175M on top of that. The Knicks save about $10M in room under the apron and in return he gets an extension worth about $5M more per year after that.

That was all on him. He didn’t have to go for that stupid dunk but he’s the type to feel jealous over someone else’s success (Brunson ). He wanted a highlight reel but ended up end of the Season play.
I really hope he gets moved. It isn’t his team anymore it’s Nova knicks now. If he can’t get with the program then gtfo.

There is a fine line between rushing and dragging your feet. Randle is a 3x All-Star/2x All-NBA that averaged 24/9/5 last season. He is going to want a max extension and there is a team out there that will be happy to pay him. My guess is that NYK are dragging their feet, quietly looking for trade partners. Let the next team handle the extension.

you are absolutely dilusional

you did not watch the games and you for sure havent watched any knicks coverage of the players in form of interviews, podcasts or whatever. Randle isnt jealous at all, not with a single fraction of a cell in his body. saying he tried that dunk because hes jealous of brunson is so ridiculous.. and the fact you say it with a straight face is hilarious lol. the knicks need him to succeed.
if you have no idea what you are talking about maybe just dont say anything

I’ve watched enough games to know he isn’t level headed. Fights with his own teammates , isn’t reliable in playoffs , even cursed out knicks fans. I would love him to succeed. I just don’t think. He fits with Nova knicks and the identity of this team under Brunsons leadership. Again re watch the replay of Randle gong for the fail dunk attempt that caused his injury . Unnecessary .

Yeah that was one of the dumbest things I've ever read on the internet. He went for the dunk because that's what you do on a fast break. You could argue he should have been on the bench at that point in the game but as long as he's out there his job is to play.

Can't blame them for waiting. Dislocations can be brutal, I've seen it end careers. Better to wait and see how things go this year.

I wouldn't say he barely played, he played in more games than he missed, he just had a fluke injury.

What an idiotic statement. It was all on him? It was bad luck. Acting like the only reason the guy goes for a dunk was to show up Brunson, is the stupidest crap I've read on here in a LONG time. Get help
