A.J. Griffin is stepping away from basketball and will be waived by the Houston Rockets. Griffin will be bought out by the Rockets and give up a significant portion of the $3.9 million he was owed for the upcoming 2024-25 season.

Griffin was previously reported to be considering leaving behind his NBA career while citing undisclosed personal and family-related reasons. Griffin was the 16th overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft out of by Duke by the Atlanta Hawks.

Griffin was traded by the Hawks to the Rockets this offseason and appeared in five games in Summer League. As training camp drew closer, Griffin's communication and appearances at the practice facility diminished.

The Rockets have no immediate plans to fill Griffin's suddenly vacated roster spot.

I would imagine it takes quite the difficult family situation to cause such a drastic life change. I respect the ability to walk away from it for whatever reason it is.

Good kid, good player, has all the attributes of a NBA level player. Got drafted by the Hawks with a so so track record in player development (Ref: Shelden Williams, Fifth Overall Selection, Marvin Williams, Second Overall Selection, Acie Law, Eleventh Overall Selection, DeMarr Johnson Pick, Sixth Overall Selection and this one hurts (Cam Reddish as of late).

Hope AJG can add a new dimension in his life involving GOD with new meaning. The demons are out there regardless of making millions and leaving a lavish lifestyle. We hope he can return in GOD speed on a NBA court

There had been rumors of issues even back when he was at Duke so I don't think this is new or sudden. It may be the "family" thing is just a generalization used as cover. Even when he was at Duke you some could sense that based on his sometimes extremely uneven play that something may be up. I think I had mentioned it in a few discussion leading up to that draft about something not being quite right with him. Whatever it is, let's hope he gets things straightened out cause he does seem like a solid good guy.
