Knicks Pursued Trade For Karl-Anthony Towns Since Beginning Of Offseason

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Oct 1, 2024 3:59 pm

While news of the New York Knicks' trade of Karl-Anthony Towns broke suddenly last week, the front office had been pursuing a deal for him over the past several months. The Knicks' need for a center with Mitchell Robinson's injury issues expedited their pursuit for Towns.

"This pursuit of Karl-Anthony Towns really picked up steam over the last, I think, week, two weeks when the Knicks started calling Minnesota about him," said Shams Charania on the Throwbacks podcast. "Making offers. Making concepts of offers. They were just given hard no's repeatedly. Way back, even around draft time, July, and into the months of August, a lot of the offers Knicks were conceptually discussing, from what I'm told, were around Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson. From Minnesota's perspective, that was not going to get it done.

"Over the last week is when finally the inclusion of Donte DiVincenzo was included in this proposal, not Mitchell Robinson. So then you have Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. But still that was a "no." Minnesota wanted an asset. [Friday] night, the Knicks, from what I'm told, finally put that first round pick from Detroit on the table.

"We got wind [Friday] that there were active conversations. Ongoing conversations. I didn't know until maybe 15-20 minutes before we dropped the news, me and my colleague Jon Krawczynski at The Athletic.

"You never know when it's a deal that's this fluid, when you get wind a couple days out it's active, it's outgoing."

One of the complications of completing the trade was finding a third team to help facilitate the deal.

"The deal for the Knicks over the past several days is finding who that third team is going to be," added Charania. "They had a few teams lined up. Charlotte became the team for them."

Gotta hand it to the Knicks. They were finally able to turn Randle and modest throw-ins into a star. Honestly didn’t think it would ever happen.

Knick dan here, Divo is not a modest throw in. He was better in the playoffs than either Julius or Kat have ever been. He’s a gamer on a cheap contract.

He's going to feast off of Ant's gravity and having Rudy as an anchor.

I fully expect him to light it up with the wolves.

Curious what people expect from DDV

Last year, he was already 4th in the league in 3PA (behind Curry, Luka and Klay) with 8.7 3PA/G

There's not much room to get up more 3PA so he'd have to add points elsewhere (but career .518 2P% is good)

His (separate) category highs are 15.5 pts 5.8 rebs 3.5 ast 2.0 FTA 1.3 stl 1.7 tov on .455/.401/.843

But career shooting splits are .428/.376/.771 and 1.2 FTA

Versus his 2024 playoff ascension was 17.8 pts 4.0 reb 2.6 ast 2.3 FTA 1.2 stl 1.2 tov on .419/.425/.867

And of course has never broken 30 mpg in the reg season

Are people expecting him to add a bit of scoring volume on to his last regular season (or playoffs)?

Or is this a bigger leap (20+ ppg) fans are looking for?

If he's in the 6th-man discussion it will be a win for MIN. Randle will be sliding into KAT's position as #2 on offense. DDV will be taking Kyle Anderson's minutes. It's hard to see him getting up more FGA's than he did last season. (12.4 - 14.7 in the playoffs.) Where would the shots be coming from?

I agree. Maybe just one of those guys people "like" and talk highly of, but the actual (numbers) expectations are comparably underwhelming.

I know I'm not expecting 20+ pts

I'm not a Knicks fan, but as a fantasy basketball player I know that the 2nd half of last season DDV was a flat out STUD. I haven't heard that he puts up empty stats. He has a reputation of being a total dog and plays very tough D. To most Wolves fans he was the bigger asset in the deal. Also consider his contract over the next 3 years is crazy team friendly. $11.5M 12M 12.5M respectively.
