Nuggets Trying To Sign Aaron Gordon To Extension Below His Max

Aaron Gordon and the Denver Nuggets are engaged in contract extension talks ahead of the start of the 24-25 season. Gordon revealed at media day that he would like to sign an extension. Gordon has a player option for the 25-26 season.

"From what I understand, they are negotiating with Aaron Gordon," said Brian Windhorst on Friday's episode of The Hoop Collective. "Aaron Gordon was eligible for a four-year, $150 million-ish contract extension. They haven't handed out that offer, otherwise he would have signed it. From what I understand, they are negotiating and they're hopeful of getting him at less than what would be his quote, unquote max.

"We'll see if that get that done, but I think they're trying to do a negotiation there."

The Nuggets acquired Gordon ahead of the 2021 trade deadline and then signed an extension in September worth $92 million over four seasons. 

Denver recently signed Jamal Murray to a four-year, $207.8 million max extension.

Definitely agree he isn't a #1 or #2 anywhere. I think the only team that has a need for him and the money to obtain AG is probably San Antonio though I am not sure what San Antonio's goal is as far as building around Wemby.

As far as his open market value, I'd imagine it would have to be something similar to what Jrue Holiday received with his extension: 4 year, $134,400,000.

the process of the Michael Porter contract is the real issue, unnecessarily given early and a huge percentage of the cap for a guy who has to check in on his back issues with a still limited game.

That's a good comp, the obvious difference being that Gordon just turned 29 and Jrue is 34. I don't think it would be that low. I would guess he would start around 25% of the cap (about $35m), which is well below his max but still a significant raise.

To be fair, Jrue might have gotten more on the open market as well, if there were an open market.You can't really call it an open market when there are only two teams with cap space.

I’ll bet you 5 dollars Chicago would give this man a bag in the open market, and it would actually make some sense. There are no financial fits on any real contenders or pretenders. If Jalen Brunson could take less, an Aaron Gordon can take less than the max to play with an MVP.

I too understand Gordon’s balance with Jokic, the intangibles etc, but hypothetically speaking, there would be way less avenues for Denver to replace Murray’s services. So “Possibly” nah, you’re reaching. Gordon’s open value are digestible overpays from ATL, Chicago, BKLN, and Houston.

I said that (specifically in DEN) Gordon is possibly more valuable than Murray. It's close. Murray is clearly the better player and would have greater value on the open market but DEN might have an easier time replacing Murray than Gordon in their system.

6-4 SG's are a dime a dozen. It is tough to find a 6-8 forward with Gordon's abilities that is willing to step back their role in their prime for the good of the team. If he left DEN's window would instantly close. Yeah, I think it's closer than you think.
