Joel Embiid exited the Philadelphia 76ers' 121-107 loss to the Indiana Pacers after being struck in the face going for a defensive rebound. Embiid was caught with an errant forearm and elbow to his face by Bennedict Mathurin.

The team ruled him out early in the second half with "impact to the right side of the face."

The 76ers are still determining whether he suffered any facial fractures.

Embiid has had number of facial injuries, including an orbital bone fracture after a collision with Pascal Siakam during the 2022 playoffs against the Toronto Raptors and one in 2018 after colliding with teammate Markelle Fultz.

I believe Embiid has played with a face mask before, which I believe would enable him to return to action sooner rather than later. Unfortunately for the Sixers fans, that’s not his m.o.

Embiid is literally the last player that should be returning sooner than later from anything. Has it ever actually turned out well when he's done that?

This isn’t a thing.

The only way they could get an exception like this is if the injury is career ending. Like Chris Bosh’s blood clot issue or Brandon Roy’s knee. The NBA would have to investigate and rule the injury as career ending, which wouldn’t happen here. In this case there’s no career ending injury, he just doesn’t seem like he wants to play.

Aside from this, they could buy him out of his 5 year, $200m+ contract. I don’t think any team would entertain this idea.

Or they could waive him and stretch the salary the way the Pistons did with Josh Smith, but this is less advantageous than a buyout.
