Jimmy Butler has communicated to the Golden State Warriors that he's unwilling to sign an extension with the franchise, which has ended trade talks with the Miami Heat for now, sources tell Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

When Butler trade talks began in December, the Warriors were on his list of preferred teams along with the Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks. Butler has appeared to zero in on the Suns, but the team currently lacks a viable path to acquiring him.

Ha, yeah right, tell us how much the extension was going to pay him. Tell us the length of it.

If he thinks he's getting a range of 3 years 150m then he's insane. Any team that gives him that is also insane. Especially after forcing his way out of all 4 of his teams.

You're not wrong to think that but it's more likely the Warriors offered more like $70M over 3yrs since they released this vague press release.

Would the Warriors even want to extend Jimmy Butler? Seems like he'd be better for them as a 1.5-year rental.

Jimmy wants Im sure a 3 year deal this summer. I doubt the Warriors offered him more than 2 based on their compete window.

This started out as a calculated gamble for Jimmy, to exert influence and get to his preferred destination PHX for one last big payout. More power to him, he's a businessman.

I feel like he's gotten out over his skis, though, by declining to extend with viable suitors like Memphis and Golden State. He might end up with no extension or big FA contract from anyone, and no new contending team. Riley would have to literally sit on Butler the asset instead of selling low, but Pat just might do it to prove he's crazier than Jimmy.

Who knows, maybe some team ends up agreeing to absorb Beal, and maybe Brad agrees to be traded their, waiving his NTC. But I would hate to hinge my hope for a resolution on either of those slim chances if I were Jimmy, let alone both.

Dude, he is forcing his way out of those teams because they don't give him 150m to start with.

Siakam did the same to Raptors when they didn't extend him, but the Raptors and Siakam handled it in a professional way.

If I were a player I'd stay away from Miami. This is not a good way to handle it.

You are giving TOR credit because Siakam handled it with class. You are blaming MIA because Jimmy didn't.

That was my first thought. Give Steph one good run next season then take the cap relief.

Of course. Most times the actions the players take depend on their team's management. I am pretty sure the current TOR office would have worked with Jimmy to find a resolution to him being traded, vs. Suspending him.

Jimmy has had this issue while departing 4 different organizations. He's been on 4 teams, so Jimmy has this issue 100% of the time.
MIA has had this issue once. They have had a total of 294 players, so MIA has this issue 0.3% of the time.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's Jimmy's fault.

That's not actually true. Miami had issues with Anthony Mason's extension after he put up an all-star season for them. Granted, he was 34 and Mase can be a problem player, but the issues with Mason and Butler are comparable. Miami didn't want to pay him. That was 2001, and just from memory. There may have been others.

Without Mason, Miami went from 50 wins to 36 wins. Granted, they might have dropped some wins if they'd kept him and they weren't close to a title contender, so I don't think it was a devastating move, but Mase was probably their best player when they let him go.

Then he went to Milwaukee on a 4-year deal and that didn't work out at all, so I don't blame Miami, just as I don't blame them for not wanting to extend Butler, but this has happened to them before.
