Lakers Kept 2031 Pick Out Of Trade After Not Being Allowed To Speak With Luka Doncic's Agent

The Los Angeles Lakers were not allowed to talk to Luka Doncic's agent, Bill Duffy, before they traded for him on Saturday, sources tell The Athletic. Because the Lakers could not gauge Doncic's interest in remaining with the franchise long-term, they kept their 2031 first round pick out of their trade package. The Lakers felt trading both of their available future first round picks was too risky without an assurance from Doncic.
The Mavericks weighed that extra pick against the risk of the trade falling apart after word of it spread to Doncic with him potentially becoming disgruntled in the process. Dallas approached one other team on a Doncic trade for another star, but they only engaged with the Lakers on serious negotiations.
Sources tell The Athletic that Doncic is "ecstatic" about joining the Mavericks. Doncic will be introduced to the media on Tuesday morning. Doncic, however, wanted to spend his entire career with the Mavericks, according to sources. The Mavericks could have offered Doncic a five-year, $345 million extension this offseason and by all accounts he would have signed it.

It gets dumber with every press release. Nico is an enemy of the state in DFW for this.

This after the fact spinning is ridiculous.
We all know the Mavs only got one 1st because Adam Silver wanted to make sure they had another asset left for another trade.

I can't imagine Nico keeps his job for very long after this.
Unless Silver promised them a ring this year to make this trade? Don't know what else it could have been. Under the table 200M payment from the Buss' to the Adelsons?

This is the most bizarre trade of all time just because of how dumb it was managed. There has to be some greater scheme going on.

if you have the patience to click/read through a 15(!) premise conspiracy theory about Dallas casino/gambling politics, here's one making the rounds:

Moving the Mavs to Vegas. Interesting. But the league is going to expand there soon anyway? Vegas and Seattle are coming and everybody knows it.

He should grab a couple double doubles at In & Out, some Tecate, and then head back to Dallas.

They could move to Vegas allowing a new East coast team to be created and evening out the divisions.

to be fair, I can't remember a player ever whose been done so dirty by their organization
say what u will about his diet or conditioning but from a very young age Luka was an ultimate Mavs player, completely bought in, saying and doing all the right things and has single-handedly revitalized the Mavs brand. he closed on a 15M house in Dallas just this week! not only did they trade him, they completely blind-sided him and ofc gave no indication in any step of the way that their intention is to f him over and void his supermax deal. the irony is, he's one of the very few players who actually deserves (and has earned) that supermax
dirtiest stuff i've ever seen from a guy whose been a Mavs soldier thru and thru and a true franchise player

Advantages of keeping it secret from everyone: Avoid bad press if it doesn't happen and avoid a prolonged uncomfortable situation with the player.
Disadvantages of keeping it secret from the player: Player buys a 15 million dollar house while negotiations are being held in secret. Uncomfortable situation that the team wanted to avoid, happens anyway. Get less in return in trade. Piss off the fan base.
Seems like Dallas didn't think it through.
Whether Luka would have been worth 70 million per year ages 27-31 remains to be seen. He could be, or maybe he ages like Embiid and not so much, but age 31 isn't that old.

Yep. You think Silver is going to let Adelson mess up the shot at a bidding war for a Vegas franchise fee? Zero chance the NBA allows the move.

Agreed. I really don't see them being allowed to move the Mavs. The NBA also want to keep LeBron around the league for ratings after he retires. It's all but given that he will be one of the owners of the new expansion franchise, likely the Vegas team.
Nico just royally messed up by not shopping around to get the best deal. That was on top of giving up on a 25 year old Luka who basically carried you to the finals. They are acting like he's Zion or something. Also Kyrie is good and all but they forgot it wasn't long ago when Kyrie was a problem and forced his way out of every former team of his from the Cavs, Celtics and Nets. As someone said, the Mavs now have 2 Robin's, neither of which has proven they can be Batman in a contender throughout their careers.

dont bother trying to reason. these folks actually believe adam silver has made that trade. like there is no point, they live in their own reality.
