By using a part of a Traded Player Exception, like the one that SAC got from Huerter, which allow you to absorb more than just what the basic trading rules allow.

SAC had room under the tax.
Which is not enough to explain it
(room under the Tax is different than room under the Salary cap, you can't use it like you want)

Teams under the tax have a $12.822M MLE that can be used to sign a player or take in trade. They used that to absorb Val’s contract and traded a minimum salaried contract back (which is an exception in itself)

True.
I thought you couldn't combine a TPE with another player. during a trade.

Per ESPN: "Sacramento used most of its $12.8 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception to acquire Valanciunas' $9.9 million salary. Sources told ESPN's Bobby Marks that the Kings are sending a 2028 Denver Nuggets second-round pick (if No. 34-60) and their own second-rounder in 2029 to Washington. "
