Devin Booker, Karl-Anthony Towns, Ja Morant Headline Extension Eligible Stars In 2025 Offseason

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Feb 19, 2025 4:15 pm

There are a number of notable veteran star players eligible to sign contract extensions during the 2025 NBA offseason. The last two collective bargaining agreements have significantly increased the rate of extensions by allowing players to sign for more money before entering free agency.

• Luka Doncic
• Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
• Trae Young
• Nikola Jokic
• De'Aaron Fox
• Kevin Durant
• Devin Booker
• Karl-Anthony Towns
• Ja Morant
• Darius Garland
• Tyler Herro
• Kristaps Porzingis

Jokic, Booker and Towns each signed supermax extensions in 2022 and have three years remaining on those deals. Each can decline the $62.8 million player option they have for 27-28 to become eligible to extend on a three-year, $212 million deal. Gilgeous-Alexander can extend on a four-year, $293 million supermax.

Doncic became ineligible for a supermax extension he had previously qualified for when he was traded by the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers. Doncic can sign an extension with the Lakers worth as much as $229 million over five years. Doncic can also sign a three-year extension with a player option for 28-29 to coincide with his 10 years of service when he can sign at the 35 percent max.

Blockbuster Free Agency is dead, the league office and the new CBA unalived it.

Overall, I think incentives for players staying with one team to extend benefit the whole NBA product. However, the Players Union needs to prioritize max players negotiating for more trade kickers and no-trade clauses. Team-player loyalty has to work in both directions if it's going to work at all, and mechanisms like this help to encourage it.

It was uncommon for teams to have max cap space long before the new CBA. If anything, the new CBA will encourage teams to live a little closer to the cap, thus making it easier to get under when necessary. The struggles teams are having right now is just an adjustment period. 3-4 years from now most teams will have this figured out.
