Kevin Durant: I Want My Career To End On My Terms

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Feb 26, 2025 8:24 pm

Kevin Durant expounded upon his decision to express to the Golden State Warriors that he preferred not to be traded back to the franchise at the deadline. Durant not only wanted to see out the season with the Phoenix Suns, but also was concerned about the state of the Warriors' roster with a midseason blockbuster.

"I want my career to end on my terms," said Durant on The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis. "That's the only thing I'm worried about. Because I see a lot of dudes who don't get that opportunity. I want to keep putting in work to make that choice on my own.

"But as far as the Warriors, I didn't want to move. And then as a player like me, I cost a lot. Me going into your team in the middle of the season is going to be a big blow to any team I'm going to. I get why you wanted to trade for me. Simple fact, that's just business. For me looking at it, it just don't make sense for either side right now to go through that when we just play the season out and if that's the decision you want to make in the offseason, then we can figure it out.

"If I can stop it, then why not? And then all the narratives that will come with all that. I didn't feel like there was a need to make that kind of a change."

Durant also spoke about how he wanted to "see this through" with the Suns this season.

KD wanted his terms to be the LeBron way, getting two more franchise-type players and then claim he's the man. But so far the reality is that he is just proving to everyone that Curry was the man and not him.

can you blame him?

He turns 37 before the season

He's missed >180 games (and counting) in the past 6 seasons (over 40%)

Versus missed just 16 games in his first 7 seasons (<3%)

I believe Kareem is the only one who has led his team to a title as a #1 scoring option at age 37.

^But this Laker team was loaded, same as Durant seems to be chasing -- LA had age 25 Magic finish #2 in MVP. Age 23 Worthy and Scott were already high scorers. Plus Cooper was top-5 DPOTY voting and Bob McAdoo close for 6MOTY. All time stacked roster -- could put them next to any of the great champions of all time.

Age 37 Duncan also won a title as the #2 scorer behind Parker (& Leonard FMVP).

^but both guys had a ton of help

Age 37 for other HOFers who had long careers:
-Lebron missed the playoffs entirely at 37 and swept out of the WCF at 38 by Denver.
-Mailman was still his team's #1 scorer (22 ppg) on a >50 win team but Utah lost in the 1st round
-Dirk played 75 games and led Dallas in scoring but lost in the 1st round w DWill and Parsons both injured.
-Jordan lead WAS in scoring but tweaked his knee in Feb and missed the playoffs (didnt get close next year)
-Kobe was completely cooked by 37 (and hadn't reached the playoffs in 5 seasons).
-Shaq was 7th in playoff minutes on his own team, behind bench players Delonte West and Anderson Varejao.
-KG 20 mpg and 7 ppg while JJ, DWill and Pierce made the 2nd round
-Nash finished top-10 in MVP voting but the Suns missed the playoffs.
-Olajuwon just 28 starts 10 ppg and no playoffs for Houston.
-Robinson won a title averaging 23 mpg and single digit points (Duncan/Parker/Ginobili/Jackson show)
-Moses played 11 games in Milwaukee
-Barkley started 18 games at 36 and retired before age 37.

If he wants any shot at relevance, let alone competing, KD needs to team up with help.

The overall narrative on Durant's career has been set in stone for years. Nothing he does now, or in seasons to come, will improve his legacy.
“And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission.” -V

He shouldn't have abandoned steph to try and win on his own
