Spurs Unsure If Gregg Popovich Will Be Able To Coach Next Season

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Mar 18, 2025 6:25 pm

Gregg Popovich has made significant progress since suffering a stroke in November and is "ahead of schedule" in his recovery, but ESPN reports that no one with the San Antonio Spurs knows yet whether he will be able to return to the sidelines next season. Popovich is 76 and the physical demands of being an NBA head coach for someone that age is already immense even before a stroke.

Popovich spent several weeks in the hospital after the stroke and was able to start walking again a few months after that. Popovich has been in communicating with the coaching staff, multiple players and team officials. By late January, Popovich was well enough to address the team in person. The Spurs had planned on having Popovich address the team immediately after the All-Star break, but that plan fell through after Victor Wembanyama experienced pain in his shoulder that was eventually diagnosed as a blood clot.

Popovich addressed the team on Feb. 27th. Popovich's passion for coaching remains, especially with the team now centered around Wembanyama.

"It's Pop's decision," one person close to the situation told ESPN. "He's earned that."

Maybe it's time to tell him he needs to retire.

Why exactly would any team want someone who has one of the worst coaching records over the last 6-7 years? And who hasn’t made it out of the first round in eight years?

Pop’s health makes him even less qualified at this stage.

And Knicks fans want Thibs fired for improving every season and consistently making it to Round 2… smh

Dude needs to take it easy and switch to a consulting role. Maybe a role like Jerry West had.

Their record is not indicative of Pops ability to coach. Which coach do you think would have done a better job with the roster the Spurs have fielded?

If he thinks he can come back, then let him. But that's definitely not something to rush after what he's experienced, for sure. The rigors of an NBA season are not small on a man his age. Hell, they aren't that light on younger folk, but Pops is 76 years old, so...

Would be nice if he's able to come back. Even if it's just sort of a "you made it back" and they give him one last game to coach or something before he transitions to a full-time front office role, you know? Just a gentler exit than "boom, medical emergency and you're donezo."

lol HE IS IN CHARGE OF THE ROSTER! Thunders, Rockets, Grizzlies all were great, then rebuilt, and became contenders during this period. While the Spurs consistently sucked.
