Trail Blazers, Chauncey Billups Reach Multiyear Deal

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sun Apr 13, 2025 3:44 pm

Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups has agreed to a multiyear contract extension, sources told ESPN on Sunday.

Trail Blazers officials negotiated a new deal with Billups' representation, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports, as the coach was finishing his fourth season and the final guaranteed year on his contract Sunday.

"But why tho?"

He comes across alright in interviews, but hard to discern any legit positive contributions from his coaching.

Blowing up the team does the organization no good. Coaching continuity for young players is vital and this teams core is super young.

Sharpe, Clingan, Scoot, Avdija, Camara under 25. Rupert is 20. Plus incoming draft picks.

Billups has developed these guys well. They surprisingly won 35 games in a very competitive West Conf. that has 8 teams finishing with 45 wins.

He also has carefully handled what could have been a disaster of a locker room. This roster does not scream chemistry.

Blazers FO knows well enough more change is needed and fired their GM. Blazers have 3 huge player salaries and none of those players are their future.

They need someone going to get them best value for De'Andre Ayton now that Clingan is their future, but Ayton has 4 years guaranteed at 35M AAV.

Unlikely to extend Anfernee Simons (again) who's a UFA after next season. He hasn't been usurped by Scoot yet but the ball looks better in his hands.

Jerami Grant is 31 yrs old with 3 years guaranteed at 30M AAV. Teams will be interested but what can he can fetch?

Ayton will find a home. I can see the Lakers talking themselves into a 7' starter very easily. Some team will definitely roll 13M on 1 yr of Robert Williams.

With starting quality players and cap space under the 1st apron to offer in trades I expect Portland could partake in multiple multi-team trades.

Big off season for the Portland Blazers. It will set in motion who they become in the next 5 years. Good on Chauncey to win the job, now he has to deliver.

Totally different situations. Those guys were all expected to win and didn't meet expectations in some manner. Each of those firings are weirdly particular.

Billups job is to develop a team, not win a ring.

And who has he developed? The best players on the roster are veterans they traded for. Scoot is a bust so far. Sharpe is fun as long as winning doesn't matter. Simons is objectively worse than 3 seasons ago. Grant is absolutely worse than 3 seasons ago. Billups is the worst coach in the NBA, hands down. And to be fair, POR hired Billups to try and entice Lillard to stay, not to lead a rebuild. He was supposed to be a winning coach an instead, the team fell apart under his watch.

Also to be fair, I am a huge Billups (the player) fan. I wish this went different, but it didn't.

2004 Pistons are my favorite all time team... but I live in POR now and it's been tough watching him try and learn on the job. Wish he was our assistant coach. Love him, but he's still not ready for the big whistle!
