Gayle Benson overruled David Griffin earlier this season when he asked for the New Orleans Pelicans to fire Willie Green as head coach to elevate James Borrego from the job, sources tell The Stein Line. Green has support from ownership of the Pelicans and he could remain as head coach now that Griffin has been fired and replaced by Joe Dumars.
Green was hired by the Pelicans to replace Stan Van Gundy in 2021 after he served as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns. Green has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the Suns should the Pelicans part ways with him.
Griffin was hired by the Pelicans in 2019.
