Gregg Popovich Won't Return To Spurs As Head Coach

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri May 2, 2025 3:49 pm

Gregg Popovich will no longer serve as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs and will transition to a full time role as Team President. Popovich suffered a stroke at the beginning of the 24-25 season and Mitch Johnson served as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Popovich won five NBA championships as head coach and is the all-time winningest head coach. Popovich assumed head coaching duties for the Spurs in 1996.

End of an era. Thanks Pop! Always enjoyed competing against your teams and your curt interview style.

By now he has achieved everything a coach could have achieved. Health is way more important. Best of luck to him.

Never liked him as a person, but damn did he prove to be one of the greatest coaches there ever was or will be. I feel fortunate to have watched the teams and players he coached and developed. Wishing him all the best.

He was a great coach until about 2018 or so. He’s been garbage since then and should been demoted after a few terrible seasons in 2021 or so.

Gregg Popovich is a master of the long game.
He built a culture of selflessness, precision, and relentless consistency. He didn’t chase the spotlight—it found him, reluctantly, after five NBA titles and a lifetime of quiet leadership.
Pop taught us that greatness doesn’t shout—it listens, learns, adjusts, and wins.

He built men, not just players. He questioned power, spoke uncomfortable truths, and never stopped evolving.
There will never be another Coach Pop.

And yet—while we’re on the topic of greatness…

Donald J. Trump.
A man who redefined politics with the flair of a Vegas headliner and the instincts of a Bronx street fighter.
Where Popovich dismantled opponents with strategy, Trump dismantled institutions with tweets.
He faced the media, the deep state, two impeachments, 91 indictments, and still somehow had time to sell gold-plated sneakers and autograph Bibles.

Different arena. Same dominance.
One leads with silence. One leads with spectacle.
And yet both command loyalty. Both inspire memes. Both know how to win—on their own terms.

To Coach Pop: thank you for elevating the game.
To President Trump: thank you for reminding us that America is still the only country where a real estate tycoon can become Commander-in-Chief and a WWE Hall of Famer.

Legends. Both of you.
So different. So American.
