Mavericks To Target Acquisition Of Point Guard In Offseason

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed May 14, 2025 6:15 pm

The Dallas Mavericks will have an unexpected instant infusion of talent after winning the lottery and their plan to select Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick. However, with Kyrie Irving out until at least January as he recovers from a torn ACL, the Mavericks will need to acquire a point guard. The Mavericks were suddenly without any capable point guards following their trade of Luka Doncic and Irving's subsequent injury.

"I'm told the Mavericks will be pursuing a point guard," said Shams Charania. "Whether that's in the trade market, or in free agency. That's a big priority for them. Kyrie Irving is targeting sometime in January to make his return. We'll see which point guard they can have as a plug and play for them."

The Mavericks have a pair of potential trade candidates in Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington as their frontcourt has become crowded with their trade for Anthony Davis and the addition of Flagg.

I've been saying this since the Davis trade. The Mavericks need a point guard even with Irving fully healthy.

They need a tall, defensive point who can shoot and offer leadership intangibles.

I don't know their cap situation, but Ty Jerome or Malcolm Brogdon are the type of guys they need.

Good thinking, but Brogdon is always injured. Ty is a bad defender and really a shooting guard. What about Tyus Jones? He is small and not a good defender, but a great point guard. You also got Dennis Schröder. Marcus Smart..? It's hard, though.

I think Jerome or Brogdon will be fine. I'd use Marshall as a backup point guard and sign Delon Wright as the third string point if/when injury occurs.

Markelle Fultz could be had for nothing, but he's more of a scorer.

Derrick White at 28mm will be too expensive for the Celtics to keep.

It will be interesting to see what Davion Mitchell commands after a pretty strong playoff showing. Miami goes through waves of overpay and refuse to pay, but he’d be a solid fit next to Klay. if he’s even hitting 30% of his threes. Another one is Caris Levert. Not a true point but plenty of lead guard abilities, uses his size to defend, and could play next to either Kyrie or Klay once the team is back at full strength.

should go for Trey young without trading the #1 pick. Hawks are in a rebuild but Trey young can’t lead that young team anywhere. Hes the best fit for a team ready to win now. Dallas will surprise a lot of people next year.

Schroder or Brogdon are the best bets. Not sure they can afford either one though.

Coby White & Patrick Williams for Gafford & PJ Washington.

Bulls get rim protector and more big depth

Mavs get a lights out shooter with decent ball handling, and a young prospect who needs a change of scenery.
